Foreign man assaults girlfriend and tuk tuk driver in Phuket

A foreign man physically assaulted his girlfriend on a tuk tuk in Phuket and later attacking the Thai driver who tried to intervene.

The tuk tuk driver posted the footage to Facebook under the account name Ko Nus Ok on Friday, March 13. He said the couple had asked him to stop so the woman could buy medicine at a roadside pharmacy. The driver said the man became angry, claiming she took too long inside, and then attacked her.

In the video, the man was seen pushing the woman back on the tuk tuk seat and grabbing her by the neck. The woman tried to defend herself and kicked him away but was unable to break free. The man then slapped her once in the face before the clip ended.

The video drew widespread attention on Thai social media and among news outlets. KomChadLuek later reposted the footage and reported the incident happened on Thaweewong Road in Patong district, Phuket.

Alongside criticism of the man in the video, some Thai social media users also criticised the driver for filming rather than helping the woman.

The tuk tuk driver later responded, saying he had intervened several times and was kicked by the foreign man. He said the foreigner told him to stay out of what he described as a personal matter.

Despite this, the driver said he managed to control the situation, remove the man from the vehicle and then take the woman to her hotel.

He said he recorded the incident in case the vehicle was damaged, so he would have evidence to seek compensation from the couple. He added that parts of his vehicle were affected, but did not say whether he reported the case to police.

A similar case was reported in Pattaya in November 2022, when a foreign man assaulted his Thai girlfriend at a house in Nong Prue district.

A rescue team responding to an alert found the woman on the ground with wounds and bruises across her body. The woman told rescuers she had been abused multiple times over four months of their relationship.
