The Government of Thailand revealed ambitions to host a prestigious Formula 1 race right in the heart of Bangkok by 2027. The plan? To transform the bustling Vibhavadi Rangsit Road into a high-speed circuit, as mentioned by Kongsak Yodmanee, governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand.

Just last week, key discussions took place to explore potential routes and tackle the challenges of staging such a grand event in an area controlled by various agencies. Kongsak’s revelations follow reports that a working committee has earmarked Bangkok’s vibrant Chatuchak area as the prime candidate for the F1 extravaganza.

The ambitious 6-kilometre circuit would weave through three of the district’s scenic parks, offering a unique backdrop to the race.

Thailand isn’t short of potential sites for the event, with five locations proposed as part of a grand scheme to boost tourism and put the nation firmly on the map as a top-tier global destination.

The shortlisted spots include U-Tapao Airport and the Eastern Aviation City in Rayong, historic Ratchadamnoen Avenue, the Chatuchak area, the vicinity of Bangkok’s famed Hua Lamphong Railway Station, and the Mueang Thong Thani zone.

Yet, Chatuchak has emerged as the frontrunner, poised to host what could become a landmark event. The next lap involves pitching this prime location to the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, the sport’s global governing body, which will dispatch officials to evaluate the site’s potential.

Should all go according to plan and approval is granted, Thailand will formally submit a bid, with a crucial decision expected by January 2025.

The government’s vision is clear: to host the race in 2027, drawing an estimated 300,000 tourists and revving up a staggering 12 billion baht in revenue. The countdown to what could be a historic race day in Bangkok has officially begun.

Last year, former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced plans to construct an F1 racing circuit near U-Tapao Airport in Rayong province within the next three to four years. The former Thai premier shared this vision after meeting with F1 executives in Milan.

The 62 year old emphasised the importance of international sporting events for boosting tourism, expressing the government’s intention for Thailand to host the F1 World Championship. Accompanying him at the meeting were Chatchai Phromlert, chairman of PTT Plc, and Kavin Kanjanapas, president of BTS Group Holdings Plc.
