Severe weather conditions expected to disrupt travel and marine activity

Thailand faces scattered storms and strong waves, with heavy rain expected in several regions, prompting officials to warn the public to stay alert.

Thailand is bracing for scattered storms across the country, as an easterly wave passes over the upper regions. Several provinces are expected to experience heavy rainfall. Residents are being urged to exercise caution due to possible flash floods and hazardous travel conditions. The Meteorological Department (TMD) also warned of moderate winds and rough seas, especially in areas affected by thundershowers.

The weather forecast for 6pm yesterday, October 15 to 6pm today, October 16, is as follows:

In the North, fairly widespread thundershowers with isolated heavy rain are expected in provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae, Uttaradit, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Sukhothai, Phichit, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun. Temperatures will range from 22 to 25°C in the early morning, rising to a maximum of 30 to 33°C. Winds will be light, blowing from the east at 5 to 15 km/h.

The Northeast will see scattered thundershowers, particularly in Loei, Chaiyaphum, and Nakhon Ratchasima. Temperatures in this region are expected to dip to 22 to 24°C at night and climb to 30 to 33°C during the day. Easterly winds will range from 10 to 20 km/h.

In the central region, scattered thundershowers and isolated heavy rain are likely in areas including Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chainat, Lopburi, Saraburi, Ayutthaya, Singburi, Ang Thong, Kanchanaburi, Suphanburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Songkhram, and Samut Sakhon. The minimum temperature will be between 21°C and 25°C, with daytime highs ranging from 30 to 34°C. Winds will blow from the southeast at 10 to 20 km/h.

Eastern Thailand will see fairly widespread thundershowers with isolated heavy rain in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. Temperatures will vary from 24 to 25°C at night and rise to 30 to 34°C during the day. Southeasterly winds will be stronger, between 15 and 30 km/h. Sea conditions in the Gulf will be rough with wave heights of about 1 metre, and over 2 metres in areas with thunderstorms.

Along the east coast in the South, fairly widespread thundershowers and isolated heavy rainfall are predicted in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. The temperature will range from 22 to 25°C, with highs of 31 to 35°C. Winds from the southeast will be steady at 15 to 30 km/h. Wave height in the Gulf will be around 1 metre, increasing to over 2 metres during storms.

On the west coast, including Phang Nga, Krabi, and Trang, scattered thundershowers are forecast. Minimum temperatures will range from 23 to 25°C, with daytime temperatures reaching 32 to 36°C. Southeasterly winds will blow at 15 to 30 km/h. Wave height in the Andaman Sea is expected to be around 1 metre, rising above 2 metres in storm-affected areas, according to the TMD.

In the Bangkok metropolitan region, fairly widespread thundershowers and isolated heavy rain are expected. Temperatures will range from 24 to 25°C overnight to highs of 33 to 34°C. Winds will be from the southeast at 10 to 20 km/h.
