Man shoots nephew over debt dispute in Thailand tragedy

Family feud turns deadly as financial tensions erupt into unexpected violence

A 65 year old man shot and killed his nephew following a long-standing dispute over a debt of several hundred thousand baht. The conflict escalated when the nephew allegedly insulted him over loud motorcycle noise outside his home.

Yesterday, May 6, Police Colonel Teerapat Piyataworat from Sikao Police Station received a report from Police Major Sataphon Chongko, an investigator at the same station, regarding a shooting incident in Mueang Phet subdistrict. The victim, identified as 51 year old Saksee Phengsuksri, was taken to Trang Hospital, where he later died.

The incident occurred the previous evening. Police, including Police Lieutenant Chantrak Chanwadi and forensic officers, examined the scene in Village 6, Ban Thap Makham, where only bloodstains remained on the road.

The gunman, identified as 65 year old Sengiame, was the victim’s uncle. After the incident, he fled. Investigations revealed that the victim and the gunman, being close relatives, had ongoing disputes, including a financial conflict where the victim borrowed a significant sum but failed to repay. This strained their relationship over time.

On the day of the incident, the victim confronted a younger relative for revving a motorcycle loudly. This led the younger relative to inform his grandfather, Sengiame, who then confronted and shot the victim.

Sengiame, with the help of his son and the young motorcyclist, transported the victim’s body in a pickup truck. They stopped en route to allow Sengiame to hide in a resort while the others continued to deliver the victim to Trang Central Hospital.

There, police investigating the incident found the young motorcyclist in distress and questioning led to Sengiame’s arrest at the resort in Village 4, Na Mueang Phet subdistrict.

During interrogation, Sengiame initially gave inconsistent statements before confessing to shooting Saksee. He surrendered the .38 calibre revolver used in the crime, along with one bullet casing, which he had his daughter hide in a shack behind their rubber plantation, reported KhaoSod.

The police seized the firearm as evidence. Sengiame faces charges of murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, carrying a firearm in public without a permit, and discharging a firearm in a populated area without valid reason. The case is being processed by investigators at Sikao Police Station.
