Residents of Chumphon province were shocked as an 87 year old monk attacked the 94 year old abbot with a knife, resulting in the abbot’s death. The incident occurred at 7.30pm, yesterday, February 16 at a temple in Mueang district.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Pathompong Chummak, Deputy Inspector at Ban Wisai Nuea Police Station, responded to a report of a violent altercation involving monks at the temple in subdistrict Tham Sing.

Arriving at the scene on the concrete road leading to the temple, they discovered a pool of blood.

The injured abbot had suffered severe knife wounds to his face, arms, and head. He was already transported to Chumphon Khet Udomsak Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The monk responsible for the attack, an 87 year old resident of the temple, did not attempt to flee and awaited law enforcement at his dwelling. The police took him into custody, and he disrobed before being interrogated.

During the investigation, the monk admitted to being under prolonged pressure. On the evening of the incident, while trimming plants with a sickle around his dwelling, the abbot approached and insulted him, provoking a momentary lapse in judgement.

In a fit of rage, he attacked the abbot with the knife until the abbot collapsed.

Nearby residents notified emergency services to transport the abbot to the hospital and informed the police, who subsequently apprehended the monk. The monk expressed remorse and a willingness to face the consequences of his actions.

Locals described the monk as a model of humility and simplicity, respected and admired by the community. His dwelling, constructed by relatives at the temple’s entrance, drew visitors there rather than to the abbot’s more secluded quarters, possibly leading to tensions, reported KhaoSod.

The abbot had recently planned to construct an adjacent dwelling, perceived by some as an act of pressure, but the incident occurred before construction began.
