Body of tourist found decomposed in Doi Suthep forest, Chiang Mai

The body, thought to be a foreign tourist, was discovered in an advanced state of decomposition in the forest of Doi Suthep, located in the Mueang district of Chiang Mai. The discovery was made yesterday, August 3.
A resident, while collecting forest products, found the body approximately 2 kilometres from the main road in tambon Suthep and reported it to the Phuping Rajanivej police station. Forensic officers on the scene indicated that the body had been decomposing for over a week, making identification challenging, though it was believed to be a foreign male.
A black backpack was located near the body, and it is currently under examination.
Police suggested that the deceased may have been a tourist who entered the forest alone, although the exact cause of death remains unknown. The area where the body was found is steep and difficult to access, complicating retrieval efforts, which were further impeded by darkness on yesterday evening.
The remains have been sent to the forensic department at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, reported Bangkok Post.
In similar news, the body of a foreign man with tattoos was discovered floating near Nui Beach in Phuket, adding to a growing number of tourist fatalities in the area’s coastal waters.
Karon Police received a report of the body around 3.20pm on May 21, after beachgoers spotted it offshore. Lifeguards swiftly responded, using a speedboat to retrieve the deceased man and bring him to shore.
The man, who was wearing only black underwear, had noticeable tattoos on his right arm and leg. Police found no identification or documents on him. A forensic doctor from Vachira Phuket Hospital, along with the provincial forensic team, conducted an initial assessment and found no external injuries or signs of a struggle. Officials believe he had been dead for approximately three days before being found.
