Foreign man jumps into Chiang Mai river after stealing police motorcycle
Chiang Mai police and rescue teams are searching the Ping River for a foreign man who stole a police motorcycle and jumped into the water to avoid arrest.
Officers from Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station, along with rescuers from several foundations in the province, began searching the river today, March 16. As of the latest update, they had not located the man and his nationality had not been confirmed.
Channel 7 reported the foreign man became involved in a high-speed chase with police after stealing a police motorcycle from Suan Dok Temple.
He reportedly rode towards the 5th Army Area Bridge on Mahidol Road in Pa Daet subdistrict. After reaching the bridge, he parked the motorcycle and jumped into the Ping River below before disappearing.

Police and rescue teams searched for more than an hour but were unable to find him. The search continued as officers suspected he may be hiding in the area. Police have not identified the foreign man or disclosed a motive for the theft.
In a similar case, a Canadian man was arrested in Krabi in December last year after stealing a car from outside a police station. A Thai car owner told officers he brought the foreign man to the station after the man climbed into his vehicle while it was parked outside a school.

The owner said he left the Canadian in the car while he went to report the matter, but the foreign man drove off. Police did not disclose the motive in that case or say whether the suspect had alcohol or other intoxicants in his system.
Another similar incident was reported on Koh Samui in February, when a Norwegian man attacked a Thai driver and stole a pickup truck. Witnesses reportedly told police they had seen the foreigner walking along the street aimlessly before the offence.
