The online world has collectively exposed the unsanitary practices of many Westerners who refuse to wipe themselves after defecating. This has severely impacted roommates, gym-goers, and employees in the service industry.
On TikTok, some individuals shared stories of bizarre behavior by certain men who refuse to cleanse their anus due to the absurd belief that touching their anus undermines their masculinity. Furthermore, some believe it leads to them being perceived as gay.
This personal hygiene problem has escalated into a public issue. For example, roommates abroad were shocked to find mysterious brown stains on their friend’s underwear in the laundry basket. Also, individuals emitting strong body odor at the gym blame the environment instead of their own habits.

The beauty and grooming industry has the brunt of this. A bikini waxing stylist on TikTok, turboweezy, revealed her unbearable problem of female clients wiping their bottoms incorrectly, from back to front. This resulted in a foul odor from accumulated waste in the treatment room.
This video went viral with over 6 million likes. It inspired many other beauty industry employees to share their horrifying workplace experiences.
Another beautician recounted finding feces on a client and reporting the incident. Customers would claim they’d already showered and therefore didn’t need to dry themselves, then casually wipe with tissue before paying and disappearing.
This is worrying because many people have never received proper hygiene advice from their parents. Doctors have quickly warned that wiping from back to front introduces bacteria to private parts, which potentially leads to serious infections.
Most recently, the issue of hygiene has spilled over to the Thai tourism industry. An American medical influencer posted a video warning tourists about skin infections from foot massages in Thailand, targeting the lack of cleanliness in massage parlors. This prompted Thai spa and hotel staff to retaliate on social media. In their posts, staff exposed instances of Western tourists being so unhygienic that staff had to endure the foul odor and frequently replace massage bedsheets because the stubborn smell was impossible to wash out.

Many Westerners admit that when they first saw a bidet, they weren’t sure if it was for washing their body or for cleaning the bathroom floor.
The most common concern was the “water pressure,” which might be too strong and painful. Another fear was splashing water all over their clothes, making them look like they’d wet themselves when they left the bathroom.
However, most tourists change their minds completely after trying it. Many even praise the bidet as one of the best inventions in Thailand, arguing that using water to wash feels much cleaner than using only paper towels. This is often compared to the saying, “If your hands are muddy, would you choose dry paper towels or water to wash them off?”
The Bumble Gun Phenomenon: Foreigners Install It in Their Homes
The impression of cleanliness is so strong that foreigners have nicknamed Thai bidets “Bumble Gun” or “Bum Gun.” Upon returning to their home countries, many even order bidets from Thailand or online to install in their homes in the US or Europe, because they can’t go back to a life solely reliant on paper towels.
