Gunfire erupts near police base as armed attackers ambush officers

A police officer was injured in a shooting incident while setting up a checkpoint in Mueang district, Yala province, at 8.15pm yesterday, April 30.

The Yala Mueang Police Station’s radio centre reported that an ambush took place near the operational base in Baan Chanan, Phorn subdistrict, resulting in one border patrol officer being wounded.

Following the incident, emergency services promptly transported the injured officer to Yala Central Hospital for immediate treatment. The officer was identified as 29 year old border patrol officer, Watcharin Noppapuang, who sustained a gunshot wound to his right arm.

Initial investigations revealed that an unidentified number of assailants ambushed the police officers as they were setting up a checkpoint in the area. Once the gunfire ceased, it was discovered that Watcharin had been shot in the right arm.

The area has since been cordoned off, with police, military, and administrative officials conducting a thorough investigation, reported KhaoSod.

In similar news, police have arrested a suspect connected to the shooting of a novice monk collecting alms in Songkhla’s Saba Yoi district. Police confirmed that the firearm used in the attack had previously been stolen from an officer at Na Pradu Police Station.

The suspect, identified as Nasri (last name withheld), was taken into custody at his home following leads from locals, CCTV footage, and evidence gathered from the crime scene. Investigators believe the attackers disguised themselves in hijabs to conceal their identities.

Further probing revealed Nasri’s alleged involvement in a March 7 bombing that targeted a police security unit in Nong Chik district, Pattani. He is also believed to be linked to multiple other incidents across Pattani province and four districts within Songkhla.

The weapon used in the shooting was reportedly stolen from a police officer in Pattani, who was killed by the attackers.
