Snail-paced start for Phuket’s new co-payment scheme

Low initial turnout prompts expanded outreach across districts

Phuket officials have launched a new co-payment scheme to support small businesses, though early registration numbers remain lower than expected.

The scheme, also known as Khon La Khrueng Plus, or half-half payment scheme, designed to support small businesses and ease the cost of living through 50% government subsidies on purchases, opened registration via the Tung Ngern system yesterday, October 15.

Merchants were able to register online or in person at Krungthai Bank branches across the island. Most opted for the digital route, with 52.1% of applications submitted online.

Phuket officials reported only modest participation: 22 merchants registered in Mueang District, 13 in Thalang, and 11 in Kathu. The underwhelming turnout followed heavy promotion, including the Phuket 120 Days Nonstop outreach campaign.

Kathu District Chief Akkaraphon Suthirak Chittsuphap and Senior Officer Thamrong Chuay-akson led officials to Si Kor Fresh Market on launch day to drum up support and assist vendors with sign-ups.

“The Khon La Krueng Plus project is a key government measure to reduce the cost of living for residents and stimulate local spending. We will continue promoting the programme to ensure every shop and community can benefit fully.”

To improve access, mobile registration points will be stationed across the island through October:

  • October 15 to 17: Provincial Hall, Kathu and Thalang District Offices

  • October 20 to 22: Rawai and Karon areas

  • October 24: Mai Khao, Sala Phikun Thong

  • October 27: Pa Khlok Subdistrict Municipality

  • October 28: Kamala Child Development Centre

The scheme requires participating merchants to be Thai nationals operating independently owned small businesses with annual revenues under 1.8 million baht. Franchises and previously suspended vendors are ineligible.

Applications must be verified at district offices and approved by Krungthai Bank before merchants can activate the scheme in the Tung Ngern app, The Phuket News reported.

Krungthai Bank reminded existing users to update the Pao Tang app and visit bank branches if personal details have changed.

Officials assured participants that “no information will be sent to the Revenue Department,” and remain optimistic that awareness and registrations will climb in the weeks ahead.
