Phuket on 24-hour alert as rainstorms, flash flood warnings issued
Phuket has been placed on 24-hour alert as heavy rainstorms drenched the island today. Officials urged residents to stay vigilant for potential flash floods, mudslides, and strong winds.
On September 15, the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (DDPM Phuket) issued a notice, authorised by Governor Sophon Suwannarat, advising the public to brace for severe weather conditions. The notice highlighted the risk of flash floods, floodwaters, and mudslides, urging residents to remain cautious and stay informed.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) indicated that the heavy weather is expected to continue and intensify until September 20 to September 21. The warning period originally spanned from September 14 to September 18 but has now been extended due to the worsening conditions.
Today, heavy rainfall inundated the southern parts of the island. Chao Fa West Road became impassable for most vehicles, particularly in front of Wat Chalong. Chalong Police reported floodwater at the Thepanusorn Intersection and Chao Fa East Road also experienced flooding near Wat Ladthi Wanaram and further north near Baan Nabon.
Further north, areas such as Ratsada and Koh Kaew experienced significant rainfall, causing inevitable traffic delays. Srisoonthorn officials have been on high alert since this morning, responding to incidents such as fallen trees blocking roads.
Tourists at the base of the hill in Kata, near the Big Buddha viewpoint, were advised to stay put as a precaution. In central Kata, Karon Mayor Jadet Wicharasorn led officials in inspecting and assisting residents affected by the floodwaters on Soi Ketkwan, reported The Phuket News.
Phuket City Municipality officials are closely monitoring the water level in Bang Yai Canal, which flows through the centre of Phuket Town. Reports indicate that water levels in the canal remain safe as of now.
In related news, Phuket is bracing for a weather onslaught as officials sound the alarm over impending flash floods, mudslides, and hazardous sea conditions.
