A luxury yacht has been completely destroyed after catching fire north off Koh Ngam in Phang Nga Bay yesterday. Nine Bristish passengers were saved and unhurt in the incident.
The Phuket Marine Police were notified by rescue workers that a boat had caught fire after being hit by lightning.
Marine Police arrived to find the yacht named ‘“Emmjay” burnt down to its waterline. No injuries was reported.
At 7pm officials, led by the Phuket Vice Governor Tanyawat Chanpinit, headed to Yacht Heaven Marina to visit the nine British passengers. They were all in good spirits following their ordeal.
The registered yacht ‘“Emmjay” is 4.90 metres wide and 15.24 metres long. The yacht caught fire whilst between Koh Ngam and Koh Payu off Phuket’s north-east coast.
Staff from the charter company told police that five male and four female British passengers arrived in Phuket on Friday. They took off from Yacht Heaven Marina on the north shore of the island, heading to Phang Nga Bay and Krabi at 2pm from Nov 3 –Nov 10.
Just after 4pm, when the yacht was 9.44 kilometres from shore a lightning bolt hit the yacht and caused it to catch fire. All nine passengers escaped from the boat and were plucked out of the water by a yacht nearby.
The remnants of the yacht will be investigated, and the passengers questioned, to determine how the fire was able to get out of control so quickly and destroy the vessel.
