Thai man blames alcohol after attempted rape of 84 year old neighbour
Elderly victim prays and chants, leading suspect to feel remorseful and flee scene

Police arrested a Thai man for attacking and attempting to rape an elderly woman at her home in Samut Prakan on the night of Sunday, September 28.
The 84 year old victim, Nuan, was found outside her home in the Bang Pli district of Samut Prakan province on Monday afternoon, September 29, after seeking assistance from neighbours. She had sustained multiple visible injuries and bruises, and her clothing was stained.
Nuan shared with neighbours and officers from Bang Pli Police Station that the suspect had broken into her home while her son was away. He launched an attack on her and attempted to rape her. She said she lost consciousness and only regained it later in the afternoon, when she sought help from nearby residents.
According to Nuan, she was unable to identify the nationality of the suspect. She recalled only that he spoke to her both in Thai and in a foreign language, which led neighbours to suspect that he might have been a migrant worker living in the area.
Police later reviewed security camera footage and spotted a suspicious man walking shirtless out of the victim’s home. Officers tracked him down and identified him as a 53 year old Thai man named Joe, who lived near Nuan’s home and had previously visited her.

Joe initially denied the accusation despite the CCTV evidence and the visible scratches on his body, which were consistent with the victim’s struggle. He claimed the injuries were mosquito bites.
Police were unconvinced by his explanation and took him to the station for further questioning. He eventually confessed to the crime.
Joe admitted that he had acted while intoxicated. He said he entered Nuan’s room through a window and began to sexually assault her. Nuan resisted and fought back, leading him to slap her twice in the face.
He claimed that although he attempted to rape her, he failed. He added that the elderly victim’s constant praying and chanting made him feel remorseful and compelled him to flee the scene.

Joe blamed alcohol for his actions, stating that he wished to apologise to Nuan. He said he would try to give up drinking, but could not promise that he would succeed.
Nevertheless, he may be forced to do so, as his actions could result in imprisonment of up to two years, a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both, under Section 295 of the Criminal Law: Physical assault.
In addition, Joe has been charged under Section 278 of the Criminal Law: Committing an indecent act against another person. The penalty is imprisonment of up to ten years, a fine of up to 200,000 baht, or both.
