Thai health initiative nears target with 18 million educated on carbs

The Ministry of Public Health announced that its initiative encouraging Thai citizens to monitor their carbohydrate intake has achieved notable success.

Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin revealed that over 18 million people have been educated on carbohydrate counting, nearing the project’s target of 20 million by March 20. With assistance from village health volunteers across the country, 445,791 individuals monitored their carbohydrate consumption between November 2024 and February.

This effort led to more than 90,000 participants losing an average of 2.89 kilogrammes, contributing to reduced risks of non-communicable diseases. The minister expects that 50 million Thais will engage with the project by the year’s end through the Smart OSM mobile application.

This initiative forms part of the ministry’s broader campaign to enhance public health by advising citizens to plan their carbohydrate intake for better blood sugar control, supported by resources such as www.nubcarb.com.

Somsak emphasised that a healthier population would alleviate healthcare expenses, ease hospital congestion, and reduce the burden on medical professionals, addressing issues of personnel shortages.

He noted that the ideal weight for men is their height in centimetres minus 100, and for women, minus 110. He encouraged those facing obesity, diabetes, or related risks to utilise these platforms to improve their wellbeing, reported Bangkok Post.
