Thai-foreign couple lose 3 million baht in Phuket home robbery

A Thai woman and her foreign husband in Phuket sought help from the police after losing 3 million baht in cash and gold during a home robbery on New Year’s Eve, December 31.

The local news Facebook page Phuket Hotnews reported the robbery yesterday, January 1. The theft reportedly occurred in a village on Soi Nayai in the Chalong sub-district, Mueang district, Phuket. The couple discovered the robbery at about 5am after returning home from a new year countdown event.

ThaiRath later reported that the Thai woman, Prapasiri, filed a complaint with officers at Chalong Police Station following the discovery.

Prapasiri told the police that she and her foreign husband noticed signs of forced entry at the entrance. They rushed to check their safe and discovered it was missing. The safe contained valuables worth 3 million baht, including 1 million baht in cash, 2 million baht in gold necklaces, and their passports.

Many Thai netizens speculated that someone close to the couple, or one of them, might have been involved in the robbery. They pointed out that entering houses in the village was not easy and remarked on how peculiar it was that the thief knew about the safe.

Police officers conducted an immediate investigation at the couple’s home following the report. However, no updates on the case have been provided.

In a related incident, a 10 year old Thai homeless boy was recently arrested after breaking into the home of an Australian businesswoman and stealing valuables worth around 3.5 million baht. The stolen items included luxury brand accessories, gold jewellery, designer handbags, and Buddhist amulets.

Another robbery was reported last month when four teenagers brutally attacked a Belgian man and stole 7,000 baht in cash from him. The foreigner sustained a head injury and wounds across his body. The attackers, aged between 15 and 18, were very young.

Also last month, a Russian woman lost 15,000 baht in cash to a Thai app-based motorcycle taxi driver in Bangkok. The driver tricked the victim into handing over her bag and secretly stole the money during the ride.
