Police yesterday arrested a Thai drug-addict for sexually assaulting his 80 year old former mother-in-law in the Isaan province of Nakhon Ratchasima.
The non-profit organisation Saimai Survive rescued the 80 year old woman, Jai, who was found sleeping on a thin mat by the roadside in the Nong Sarai sub-district, Pak Chong district, Nakhon Ratchasima province. Jai told the organisation that the sexual assault by her former son-in-law had forced her to abandon her home.
Jai explained that the assault took place in mid-December last year. Her 40 year old former son-in-law, Somkid, came to her home and strangled her. He pushed her to the ground and threatened her.
“I’ve just taken 20 Yaba (methamphetamine) pills. If you scream, I’ll kill you.”
Jai said she did not dare to scream for help and was unable to resist Somkid’s strength. He attempted to rape her but failed, so he ordered her to perform oral sex. Jai refused, prompting the suspect to repeatedly slap her in the mouth. Jai was then forced to provide him with oral sex.
Terrified that Somkid would return to harm her again, Jai no longer dared to stay at her home and chose to live by the roadside.

The Saimai Survive team pursued the case, leading to Somkid’s arrest yesterday, January 6, in the Isaan province of Ubon Ratchathani. Somkid denied the accusations, prompting police to gather further evidence to press charges against him.
Officers also plan to review Somkid’s criminal history to determine the additional legal punishments he may face.
According to a similar previous case, Somkid may be charged under Section 278 of the Criminal Law for sexually assaulting a person aged over 15 through threats or violence. This offence carries a penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to 200,000 baht, or both.

His drug use could result in up to one year in prison, a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or both, under Section 162 of the Narcotics Control Act.
In a related incident, two elderly women in Nakhon Ratchasima came forward seeking justice after police failed to arrest the rapist who sexually assaulted them months ago. Both women were raped in their rice fields in broad daylight. No arrest has yet been made in connection with that case.
