Pheu Thai pushes bill to repeal 23 NCPO orders

Pheu Thai Party list member of Parliament Chaturon Chaisang advocates for a bill to revoke 23 orders issued by the disbanded National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). This proposed legislation is set to be introduced in the forthcoming Parliamentary session.
As the chairperson of the Parliamentary committee responsible for reviewing outdated NCPO directives, Chaturon provided an update on the bill yesterday, April 10.
After seven months of discussions, the committee has completed its examination of the 23 orders deemed unnecessary or inappropriate, aligning with the Cabinet’s recommendations.
Chaturon stated that the bill is prepared for its second and third readings in the next session, expressing confidence that it will receive approval from both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
He also stated that the committee might eventually repeal up to 55 NCPO orders, with an additional 22 still under examination.
These remaining orders are being addressed through ongoing collaboration with government bodies and civil society organisations.

Among the orders targeted for repeal are those infringing on civil liberties, such as NCPO Order 49/2014, which criminalised political support. Chaturon argued that such measures violate constitutional guarantees of peaceful assembly and fundamental principles of the rule of law.
He noted that the complexity and technical nature of the remaining 22 orders have delayed their repeal, as some involve broader administrative policies or require new legislation as a replacement, reported Bangkok Post.
To dismantle the legacy of the NCPO, Chaturon emphasised the necessity for continued cooperation among the government, relevant agencies, and Parliament.
In similar news, the Bhumjaithai Party has dismissed speculation of rifts with coalition leader Pheu Thai, following Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s recent visit to Buriram province. The visit, the party insists, was not politically motivated but part of a government workshop on provincial development.
Party co-founder Newin Chidchob hosted the 38 year old prime minister at the Chang International Circuit to present the “Buriram Model” as a potential development blueprint. She was accompanied by Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Interior Minister Sabeeda Thaised, and senior officials. The party stressed its openness to all political visitors and reaffirmed the coalition’s unity.
