  • Wounded turtle rescued amid rising beach pollution at Thailand’s Sirinat National Park

Wounded turtle rescued amid rising beach pollution at Thailand’s Sirinat National Park

In the coastal paradise of Thailand’s Sirinat National Park, an unexpected occurrence unfurled yesterday. A hapless turtle was found ensnared in discarded fishing nets on Nai Yang Beach, Phuket, severely injured and in distress amid inclement weather.

Park officials, alerted to the creature’s predicament by vigilant tourists, made immediate efforts to liberate it from the nets, battling against high waves and forceful winds. The head of the park, Sorasak Rananan, said the turtle was found at 7am, caught up in debris and discarded fishing nets in challenging weather conditions.

Upon being freed from the ensnaring nets, it was apparent that the turtle was injured. It bore a wound on one of its legs and one on its body.

The officials measured the turtle as part of their rescue efforts and found the creature spanning 60 centimetres from head to tail, with a width of 62 centimetres from the tip of one flipper to the other.

Collaborating with the Marine Resources Research Center, the park officials arranged for the wounded turtle to be taken into care. A vet from the centre, identified as Pathompong Jongchit, collected the animal, confirming its planned course of rehabilitation, reported The Phuket News.

Due to the heavy rain and strong winds, there has been a considerable amount of rubbish collected on the beach. The park staff are working to clean this pollution as frequently as possible.

Among the noteworthy debris gathered at shore, officials found two mooring buoys, typically used for securing large boats. Such widespread and frequent incidences of beach pollution underscore a need for stringent environmental conservation efforts, a necessity amplified by the plight of the unfortunate turtle injured amidst the discarded fishing nets.

Two weeks ago, an endangered hawksbill turtle found stranded at Patong Beach was taken into the care of the Siritharn Rare Marine Life Rescue Centre, at Ao Makham on the eastern coast of Phuket. Read the full story HERE.

The boss showed a lack of empathy towards the young woman’s situation, reported KhaoSod. Comments were made, such as…

  • Masked rider gang’s loan sharks left FIN-ancially busted as ECD rides in for arrests

Masked rider gang’s loan sharks left FIN-ancially busted as ECD rides in for arrests

Economic Crime Suppression Division (ECD) officers arrested five loan sharks from the Masked Rider Gang for attacking debtors and demanding extortionate interest rates of 400% per year.

The arrests were made following a complaint by a debtor in June of this year when he was attacked by loan sharks at his condominium. He explained that he borrowed the money from a Facebook page called Informal Lone 24 Hour at the end of last year. He put his condo as collateral and handed over the condo’s keycard to the gang. However, the staggering interest rate of 400% per year made it impossible for him to keep up with the monthly payments. Consequently, the loan sharks resorted to publicly shaming the victim on social media and threatened him.

Matters escalated further as he still could not pay the debt and interest, so five members of the loan sharks’ gang stormed into his condo and attacked him to get money. He then approached the police for help. He stated that the gang was known among debtors as the Masked Rider Gang.

Following the investigation, the ECD discovered the massive scale of the loan sharks’ operations. They had an administrator managing their Facebook page, a team of contractors, and a debt collector group.

Officers gathered more evidence until they were confident about the criminal actions of the gang and issued arrest warrants against five members.

Officers made the arrests in four spots, in the Chon Buri, Pathum Thani, Samut Prakarn, and Chianrt provinces. During the operation, officers also seized two mobile phones, 36 loan contracts, and 56 ATM cards at their office.

The arrested suspects included a 24 year old man named Amphon Meepho, a 27 year old man named Danusorn Sungsud, a 27 year old man named Thanphon Paensuwan, a 26 year old man named Panupong Chantayak, and a 42 year old woman named Lalita Nawakun.

They were charged with offering personal loans without permission, demanding interest exceeding the legal rate, and using violent acts to collect a debt.

For the illegal operation of personal loan institutions, the suspects face imprisonment of one to five years and a fine from 100,000 to 500,000 baht. The imprisonment of up to two years, a fine of up to 200,000 baht, or both for imposing illegal high interest rates. Moreover, using violent acts to collect debt will result in up to one year in jail and a fine of up to 100,000 baht.

  • Phuket plans 1,000 tree planting endeavour at Thalang Park for King’s birthday

Phuket plans 1,000 tree planting endeavour at Thalang Park for King’s birthday

Officials in Phuket revealed plans to plant 1,000 trees at the renowned Thalang Memorial Park, also known as the Victory Field, come this Sunday. The tree planting endeavour coincides with the activities commemorating the 71st birthday of His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn, which will be celebrated on July 28.

Phuket Governor Narong Woonciew chaired the meeting where this announcement was made. In attendance at the press conference that followed were several significant figures, namely Rewat Areerob, the president of Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation (PPAO), Chan Wongsattayanon, the president of Thao Thep Krasattri Thao Srisoonthorn Foundation (widely known as the ‘Phuket Heroines Foundation’), and Suksawadee Chanchu, who heads the Phuket Professional Women’s Association.

Suksawadee took the opportunity to share that they have chosen Thong Urai trees for planting, also known as the yellow trumpet tree. These trees are celebrated for their yellow blossoms, which pay homage to the official colour of the King. She said…

“The intention behind this action is twofold: To honour His Majesty King Rama 10 and to increase the green space in Phuket. It’s imperative for us to note here that following this initiative, Thalang Memorial Park will undoubtedly possess a picturesque landscape. Such transformation will invariably drive more tourists to visit this monument.”

Crediting its historical significance, the Thalang Memorial Park plays host to the annual Heroines Festival. This event venerates the victories of ‘Chan’ and ‘Mook’ – two sisters who spearheaded the thwarting of a Burmese invasion in 1786. Each March, residents of the popular holiday resort and tourists alike gather here for a commemoration of these admirable Phuket heroines, reported Phuket News.

As festivities approach, the community beams with anticipation for Sunday’s event, eagerly prepared to celebrate the King’s birthday while enhancing their city’s natural beauty.

  • San Mahaphon chairman found after mysterious 4-day disappearance in forest

San Mahaphon chairman found after mysterious 4-day disappearance in forest

The chairman of San Mahaphon Municipality Council, located in Chiang Mai province, has been located after mysteriously disappearing for four days. He was found today in a forest nearly 5 kilometres from where he disappeared. He went missing from home without a trace from July 17 onward. According to family members, he had crossed the Mae Faek dam and a bridge before his disappearance, as captured by CCTV cameras.

Family members also reported that they had been unable to contact the missing man, 57 year old Pairoj Mekkayai, as his phone had been switched off.

However, yesterday morning, a message sent via Pairoj’s mobile phone to his son read…

“I can hear the voices of my son and grandchild, I miss them.”

After this, the phone was again switched off. The family believed Pairoj was still alive, launching a new search based on the last known location of his mobile signal in a dense forest near Ban Nong Lom village, where Pairoj’s home was situated.

The rescue was finally made today, as a local discovered a man stranded in the forest near Ban Huai Som, Mae Hor Phra, Mae Taeng district, Chiang Mai, which was approximately 5 kilometres away from the last location captured by the CCTV at Mae Faek Dam. Confirmed to be Pairoj, the chairman was found resting in a villager’s hut, appearing to be out of sorts, reported KhaoSod.

According to Pairoj, he had been lost and unable to find his way home, without having eaten for several days. Initially, the rescue team coordinated with the family and then proceeded to transport Pairoj to Mae Taeng Hospital for a thorough medical examination.

Many are relieved, as concerns had arisen that Pairoj may have harboured self-harming thoughts. Pairoj is known for his private nature, often keeping problems to himself and seldom sharing. Reports are claiming that Pairoj could have been grappling with personal issues and has exhibited signs of depression, causing worries that stress may have triggered this mishap.

Curiously, a similar incident occurred last year when Pairoj disappeared for a day and a night before contacting his family saying he fell from a tree in the forest. This time, four days passed before he was found. The family fears Pairoj may have harbour further personal issues, refusing to seek help, prompting his disappearance.

Illegal logging crackdown: Two men arrested and valuable timber seized in Chiang Mai park

In a continuous crackdown on illegal logging, officials from Sri Lanna National Park in Chiang Mai arrested two men and seized valuable processed timber. It is part of broader efforts to deal with crimes against forest resources and wildlife. Additionally, a hunt is underway for four other men allegedly involved in the illegal activities.

The order for this intensified action was given by Acting Director Athaphon Charoenchansa, in charge of the Department for Marine and Coastal Resources. He delegated the task to Anan Kunnil, Head of the Sri Lanna National Park, and his inspection officials to carry out continuous patrol routines in the park.

During a routine patrol, the officials discovered a group of men cutting down trees with chainsaws near Doi Tham Muang in the area of Ban Pang Daeng, Moo 9, Chiang Dao sub-district, Chiang Dao district, Chiang Mai province. Two men were apprehended while four others managed to evade the officers due to their familiarity with the terrain. However, the arrested people could identify the fleeing suspects, reported KhaoSod.

The officials in association with soldiers from the 13th Ranger Forces Regiment, Kamphaengset Army Camp (Pang Makhong Checkpoint) inspected the scene. They seized the processed Padauk (a valuable hardwood species) logs amounting to 0.83 cubic metres, costing 58,100 baht (US$1,710) to the state. They also confiscated four chainsaws, a knife, an axe, a motorcycle, and a wallet.

Such offences are against forestry law and hence the arrested individuals, along with the confiscated items and illegally felled logs, were handed over to the inquiry officers at the Chiang Dao Provincial Police Station in Chiang Mai, for further legal proceedings and to expand investigations to apprehend the remaining suspects.

In May, authorities in Phayao, northern Thailand, yesterday arrested a group involved in illegal logging and seized various items, including processed timber and amphetamines. The suspects were apprehended in the Wiang Lor Wildlife Sanctuary in the province’s Choon district. To read more click HERE

A scheduled review of the pump system in the Chalong Underpass in Phuket has led to a day-long closure of the passage this Saturday. The routine check-up is a necessity to ensure the pump system’s continued functionality, particularly amidst the heavy rainfalls during Phuket’s soggy season. The Phuket Highways Office (PHO) has confirmed the closure.

The inspection draws its significance from its regularity and the intent to ensure the seamless operation of the underpass’ integral pump system. As Phuket goes through periods of heavy showers typical of its rainy season, the functioning of the underpass systems becomes crucial.

Bad hair day: Jordanian barber busted for illegally trimmed tourist trade in Phuket

Police officers yesterday arrested a Jordanian national for operating unlawfully as a barber, primarily serving foreign tourists, in Phuket. The arrest occurred in the popular beach resort town of Patong.

The news regarding the man’s illegal activities came to light through digital news platforms and was later confirmed by the Patong Police. The media has been vigilant, reporting instances of foreign nationals taking away jobs earmarked for Thai citizens, which prompted the police to take action.

The police officers traced the Jordanian man to the Professional Barber Shop located on Rat U-Thit 200 Pi Road. At the time of the arrest, the suspect was engaged in providing barbering services to a male tourist.

The owner of the facility is reported as a lady, who for confidential reasons, has been referred to only using her first name, Petladda.

The arrested individual, a man known to the police simply as Osamh, did not have his actual passport at the time of his arrest. Nevertheless, he managed to display a photograph of his passport via his mobile phone. The police verified his Jordanian nationality from this image, reported The Phuket News.

Upon his arrest, Osamh couldn’t furnish officers with a work permit, raising questions about his legal working status in Thailand. Moreover, according to Thai law, foreign nationals are strictly prohibited from engaging in professions such as barbering, hairdressing or working in a beauty salon. These professions are reserved exclusively for Thai nationals.

Osamh along with the alleged intermediaries were detained and taken to the Patong Police Station for further lawful procedures.

In a concluding statement, an officer from the Patong Police Station confirmed the arrest and the subsequent legal course of action against the arrested individuals. They encouraged individuals in similar circumstances to secure and maintain valid work documentation to avoid similar incidents.

  • Lethal liaisons: Alleged Thai cyanide serial killer and accomplices charged in deadly plot

Lethal liaisons: Alleged Thai cyanide serial killer and accomplices charged in deadly plot

The alleged Thai cyanide serial killer and her associates have been officially charged in connection with a series of poisonous murders.

Sararat “Am” Rangsiwuthaporn, her ex-husband 39 year old Police Lieutenant Colonel Withoon Rangsiwuthaporn, and the alleged killer’s 35 year old lawyer Thanicha Aeksuwannawat have also been indicted.

All three, now in the dock, face accusations of attempted murder and colluding to commit theft. In addition, Pol. Lt. Col. Withoon and Thanicha Aeksuwannawat are being held to account for allegedly aiding the alleged Thai cyanide serial killer in evading capture and colluding with her to conceal and dispose of incriminating evidence.

These indictment notices were reportedly delivered by the Criminal Cases Office 5, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Attorney General (OAG).

The accused have rebuffed the charges placed against them. The prosecutors, however, have made it clear that an anticipate bail petition from the alleged 35 year old Thai cyanide serial killer would be rejected, given that the severity of the allegations levied against her poses a significant risk of her attempting to abscond, reported Bangkok Post.

Sararat, who is currently languishing in the Correctional Institution for Women situated in the Bang Khen area of Bangkok, attended the court proceeding via a video link. Pol. Lt. Col. Withoon and Thanicha also made court appearances. However, they were released on bail for the sum of 100,000 baht each.

Taking forward the case, the court has set the date of October 2 for the comprehensive examination of evidence, necessitating the presence of all suspects and victims.

The chilling investigation into this series of poisoning murders was triggered by Sararat’s arrest on April 25 in relevance to the death of Siriporn “Koy” Khanwong, who is one of the 15 alleged victims of this poisoning plot.

Siriporn tragically lost her life on the banks of the Mae Klong River in the Ban Pong district of Ratchaburi while releasing fish as part of a merit-making ceremony on April 14, in the company of Sararat. Cyanide was later discovered in her blood samples.

Throughout the investigation, it was also found that Sararat allegedly stole Siriporn’s designer bags, mobile phones, and lottery tickets, whose total worth was estimated to be 154,630 baht.

As the investigation progressed, more shocking allegations surfaced that Sararat had poisoned 15 people, resulting in the death of 14. Law enforcement offices have stated that she pawned the victims’ belongings and utilised the money generated to cover her ex-husband’s debts.

The police concluded their investigation into the 14 suspicious deaths and one attempted murder case last month and have since then handed over the case files to the prosecutors, who are continuing to scrutinise the other 14 suspected murder incidents.

According to Deputy national police chief Police General Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn, Sararat could potentially face over 75 charges.

These encompass premeditated murder, attempted murder, theft that resulted in death, and forgery across 15 cases spanning from 2015 till now.

These heinous crimes are reported to have occurred in seven provinces – Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon, Kanchanaburi, Phetchaburi, Ratchaburi, Udon Thani, and Mukdahan.

  • Election winner, Pita Limjaroenrat, blocked to become Thai Prime Minister

Election winner, Pita Limjaroenrat, blocked to become Thai Prime Minister

In a marathon seven-hour session of Parliament yesterday, the majority of members arrived at a consensus that Pita Limjaroenrat, leader of the Move Forward Party (MFP) and the winner of the General Election, would not meet the eligibility criteria to assume the position of Thai Prime Minister (PM). Furthermore, he will not be considered a candidate for the second round of voting for the PM post.

During the first Parliament meeting to vote for a new PM on July 13, Pita failed to secure enough votes to become the PM. Out of at least 375 votes, Pita and MFP managed to garner 324 votes, with support coming from 13 senators and 311 Members of Parliament from the eight parties on the MOU coalition government agreement.

The eight parties under the MOU agreement, MFP, Pheu Thai, Thai Sang Thai, Prachachart, Seree Ruam Thai, Fair, Plung Sungkom Mai, and Pheu Thai Ruamphalang, had a meeting to prepare for the second Parliament meeting to vote on the new PM yesterday, July 19.

Following the discussion, the parties agreed to propose Pita once again as the PM candidate. However, this decision sparked controversy among the political parties, with some politicians arguing that Pita could not be proposed for a second time due to the Regulations of the Parliamentary Assembly (2020). On the other hand, the coalition government parties maintained that their decision was in accordance with the law.

During the Parliament meeting yesterday, the Deputy Leader of the Pheu Thai Party, Suthin Klansaeng, proposed Pita to be the PM of Thailand for the second time. Pita was the sole candidate in the meeting.

This led Parliament President Wan Muhamad Nor Matha (Wan Nor) to ask the assembly to discuss whether Pita could be a candidate again, considering his failure in the previous vote.

During the debate session, 12 senators and MPs expressed their opinions on the matter. Those who disagreed argued that Pita could not be proposed as a candidate again due to article number 41 of the Regulations of the Parliamentary Assembly in 2020.

According to this 41st article, a motion that has been rejected cannot be reintroduced unless the Parliament President permits it.

MPs from MFP and other coalition government parties held the opposing view, contending that there were no specific laws or rules restricting the number of proposals for a candidate.

During the meeting, the Constitution Court launched an official document to suspend Pita from his MP duty during the investigation of his shares in the media company. So, Pita had to exit the meeting. He left a statement before leaving stating…

“The Constitutional Court temporarily suspend my duties. Therefore, I would like to take the opportunity to say goodbye to the Parliament president until we meet again. I would like to ask fellow members of the National Assembly to take care of the people. I think Thailand has changed. It is completely different since May 14. People have won halfway. In another half, I did not perform my duties as an MP, so I asked my fellow members to continue to take care of the people.”

Finally, the Parliament president allowed each MP and senator to vote on whether Pita could be a candidate for the second round of elections. The outcome was decisive. Of 716 votes, 395 members stated that Pita could not be reintroduced as a candidate, while 312 members supported the proposal. Eight members abstained and one member did not vote.

Only eight of the 13 senators who supported Pita in the initial election continued to back him.

The leader of the Seree Ruam Thai Party, Sereepisuth Temeeyaves, revealed to the media that he did not vote during the meeting. He shared that he did vote because the senators and the opposite side won.

Sereepisuth added that the other members of the coalition government parties should have done what he had done as this might have given Pita another chance to be proposed as a candidate. Sereepisuth also suggested that Pita and MFP relied on their fans too much.

After the meeting yesterday, Parliament President Wan Nor announced that the next meeting to vote for PM will happen from 9am on July 27. He emphasised that Pita could not be proposed as a candidate again this time.

  • Nonthaburi clash over cruel joke triggers shocking gunfire: Three injured

Nonthaburi clash over cruel joke triggers shocking gunfire: Three injured

A cruel joke resulted in shocking gunfire, with a total of seven shots fired and three people injured. The incident took place around 10pm yesterday, in front of Building 85 in the Euar Arthorn 2 Project area, in the Pak Kret district of Nonthaburi, Thailand.

The scene of the incident revealed a littering of bullet casings, six in total, along with a one-foot-long knife. There was also the presence of shattered alcohol bottles. An initial investigation identified the injured as a 50 year old Nueng, who had been shot in the right rib and left elbow and sustained a leg injury from a broken bottle. Two other victims, 32 year old Saknarong, and 33 year old Wissanu suffered knife wounds.

The 13 year old daughter of Saknarong had made a frantic call to her father to report that a group of men had harassed her and damaged her mobile phone. Saknarong and his friend arrived on the scene to confront the group but were attacked with knives, resulting in injuries, reported Sanook.

Nam, the daughter of Saknarin, reported that she and a friend were walking past the men when one suddenly urinated in their path causing them to flee but not before tripping and injuring herself.

She immediately called her father, who arrived with his friend to confront the group of around 4-5 men who were drinking in front of the building. An argument erupted, following which the group attacked the father and his friend with bottles and knives, forcing them to flee. The father then called his friends for help, which escalated the situation, resulting in gunfire and injuries.

Following the incident, the police arrived on the scene. Preliminary information suggested that one man, identified as Nueng, who tried to intervene in the quarrel, got shot and injured.

Kamonrat, who caught the whole incident on her phone, revealed that she had filmed the events after hearing the quarrel from her room.

The footage showed the altercation escalating with weapons, including knives, sticks and bottles, and culminating in several gunshots. She immediately called the police.

The police, upon investigation, concluded that the father of the girl tried to confront the men who had scared his daughter, causing her to flee and get hurt. This led to a vicious altercation involving knives and guns.

The police are currently questioning witnesses and the injured for a comprehensive account of the incident, as well as identifying the individual responsible for opening fire.

Critical evidence was found during the assault inquiry that included CCTV footage tracing the escape route of the culprits. Laoangdao was seen riding a motorbike with a man of hefty stature. Surprisingly, the description did not match that of Warayut leading to another aspect of the case.

It was later revealed that the person was Surada (surname withheld), a local in the neighbourhood who owned the motorbike found on the scene runaways took, leading investigators to interrogate him. Upon further investigation, the duo confessed to their involvement.

To recreate the crime, the duo, Warayut and Surada described they visited Manirat’s home in the early hours. When they found the front gate locked, they broke the window to get inside and waited for Manirat to return home. Upon her arrival, Surada grabbed her, stifled her and struck her with a piece of wood leaving her unconscious, with Laoangdao preventing her escape. They then tied her hands and feet and fled the scene after robbing the place.

Details of the assault also revealed that the criminal weapons and stolen goods were discarded in the forest on the side of the road.

Laoangdao, in her confession, highlighted that she had been living with Warayut for eight years, having a generally pleasant life, with him supporting her and her children. However, she faced resentment from Warayut’s mother, claiming that she tried to separate them and spread ill words about her. Carrying the resentment, she turned to Surada, a close relative for support and the plot unfolded.

She later acknowledged their actions and even felt remorse, apologising for their assault on Warayut’s mother. Strongly maintaining the innocence of her husband, she insisted that he was unaware of their plans.

The police, moving forward with their probe, are now examining Warayut’s association with this case, and if found not guilty, the authorities will request the court to release him, reports KhaoSod Online.

Thai potash mine disaster: Unseen contamination taints 10,000 rai of land

Analysis from the Synchrotron Light Research Institute (SLRI) has found a worrying degree of contamination on a significant amount of agricultural land adjacent to a potash mine in Nakhon Ratchasima. As per the analysis, over 10,000 rai of land has been tainted with sodium chloride and potassium chloride.

The firm holding the operating rights to the mine, Thai Kali Co, has a leasing agreement that extends until 2040 and spans roughly 9,000 rai. The mine stretches across the tambons of Nong Bua Takiat, Nong Sai, and Non Mueang Pattana in the Dan Khun Thot district.

Protest from approximately 150 farmers in June served as a spark to the situation. The disgruntled agricultural workers claimed that the wastewater emanating from the mine had seeped into their farms, tainting natural water resources and infusing the soil with high salinity levels. As a result, the cultivation of rice and other staple crops became a challenge.

The multitude of grievances led to a petition towards Governor Sayam Sirimongkol on June 27. Villagers demanded a shutdown of the mine, which eventually led to a temporary cessation of mining operations at the location awaiting further inspection by state authorities.

The director of the Office of Environment and Pollution Control 11 (OEPC11), Thanachai Wansuk, confirmed the samples of soil delivered to SLRI contained hazardous levels of sodium chloride and potassium chloride, yesterday.

The test results are to be dispatched to the governor and the creation of a working group is imminent to assess the extent of the damage inflicted on the farmlands. A fair compensation is then expected to be brokered, as elaborated by Thanachai Wansuk.

Supakorn Rakmai, head of SLRI’s light transport utilisation and operation department, further supplemented that trace amounts of heavy metals have been discovered in addition to the excessive presence of sodium chloride and potassium chloride, reported Bangkok Post.

Thai tragedy: Fake cops’ brutal attack claims a life

A Thai man lost his life in a brutal targeted attack by two fake cops. The victim, aged 52, was killed at his home after being shot four times. The crime happened in Phetchabun province around 6.30pm, on July 19.

Saichon Pumpuang, the investigative officer from Dong Khoi Police Station in Phetchabun province, promptly received the news of a male victim shot dead at his residence situated in Chon Daen district. The official coordinated with medical personnel from the Chon Daen hospital and, along with the Ruamkatanyu Foundation rescue team, promptly arrived at the crime scene.

On their arrival, they discovered the deceased in a wooden house built on high pillars, sitting slumped against a door with gunshot wounds to the face, right arm and abdomen. The investigative team managed to locate a bullet casing that became crucial evidence for their ongoing inquiry.

Neighbours adjacent to the murder scene recounted chilling tales of the crime. According to them, while they were mowing their front lawns, two men were seen approaching in a pickup truck. The fake cops searched for the victim and led him behind the house. Moments later, shouts claiming to be police officers conducting a urine test were heard. The victim, however, asked to use the bathroom first. Shortly after, four gunshots were fired followed by the two men sprinting back to their vehicle before speeding away.

The homeowner, an elderly woman, claimed that the deceased made a living by selling ice in the local market and was not related to her. They were simply acquainted due to the victim’s occasional visits to deliver food and groceries out of sympathy for her old age and poverty. The victim had recently brought the elderly woman food before his life tragically ended. She confessed to being unaware of the identity of the gunman or the cause of the incident.

Relative denies sexually assaulting 15 year old pregnant teenager

A shocking case was brought to the attention of Bang Sao Thong Police authorities, involving a pregnant 15 year old girl who had allegedly been sexually assaulted by her relative. The ramifications of this incident reverberated through the local community of Bang Sao Thong, Samut Prakan.

The recent developments unfolded around noon on July 18, at Bang Sao Thong Police Station, Samut Prakan. The accused man, pseudonym Suradech, regarded as the girl’s relative through marriage, willingly turned himself in. He denied the sexual assault allegations and expressed his intention to clear his name in court.

Contrary to the allegations, Suradech presented his perspective to the media. The truth, he indicated, was that, indeed, the girl often shared a bed with him and his wife. However, he clarified that this was the result of the girl wanting to play with his son and she only approached him to borrow his son’s phone to contact her boyfriend -her parents had denied her phone privileges.

Suradech elaborated that he did not think much of these instances and that his wife was always present during these occasions. As far as he could recall, he was sometimes so intoxicated that he had no memory of the girl sharing the bed until he woke up to her mother summoning the minor. Suradech said…

    “I didn’t sexually violate her.”

He claimed that he would accept responsibility if DNA test results matched his, but vowed to press a counter-lawsuit if the results didn’t correspond to the charges. Alarmed about his immediate future, Suradech questioned whether he would now be detained, as he lacked the financial means to obtain bail. He expressed angst by questioning. He said…

“If the results prove that I didn’t do it, who is responsible for this ordeal I’m going through?”

Meanwhile, Suradech’s wife, pseudonym Bee, defended him in an interview, reiterating her belief in his innocence. She accepted that the girl often shared their bed but emphasized she was always present. She expressed her confusion at why the minor never confided these alleged incidents with her or anyone else after the supposed first mishap, instead, allowing it to recur.

Initially, Bang Sao Thong police charged Suradech with sexual assault and harassing of a minor under 15 and then, an additional charge was placed considering the girl had turned 15 before some of the alleged incidents occurred.

Upon hearing of his impending court appearance, Suradech, consumed with emotion, embraced his son in the centre of their residence, reported Sanook.

  • Election intrigue: Thai court mulls lawsuit over EC’s unjust targeting of MFP leader Pita

Election intrigue: Thai court mulls lawsuit over EC’s unjust targeting of MFP leader Pita

In a significant development, the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases is considering a lawsuit against the Election Commission (EC) of Thailand for unjustly targeting Pita Limjaroenrat, the Move Forward Party’s leader, resulting in damage to his reputation.

A verdict on whether to officially open the case for hearing is expected at 9:30am on August 9. Those implicated in the lawsuit include EC Chairman Ittiporn Boonpracong, all five election commissioners, and EC Secretary-General Sawang Boonmee, as disclosed by Yongyut Saokaewsatit, the legal representative of Pita.

It is claimed that all seven EC officials are culpable for negligence of official duties and misconduct, as detailed in Section 157 of the Criminal Code. The lawyer stated that if found guilty, this could potentially lead to the impeachment of all seven EC officials.

This case comes on the back of the EC’s decision to escalate an ineligibility case relating to Pita’s prior holding of 42,000 shares in iTV Plc, to the Constitutional Court. The lawyer said…

“It has been incumbent on these seven EC officials to meticulously scrutinise Limjaroenrat’s eligibility before the general election that took place on May 14.”

Yet, it appears that the officials did not fulfil this duty until a complaint was lodged by political activist Ruangkrai Leekitwattana. Leekitwattana accused Limjaroenrat of being ineligible to compete in the election on the grounds of his stake in a media company, according to the lawyer, reported Bangkok Post.

Prior to his candidacy in the election, the 42 year old MFP leader had already served a full term as an MP post his victory in the 2019 General Election. Up until then, the EC had raised no concerns about his eligibility. However, they hurriedly investigated the Bangkok-born politician’s case and forwarded it to the court just before last week’s parliamentary vote to elect the country’s new prime minister, in which Pita was the sole nominee. The lawyer added…

“The move was apparently designed to smear Pita’s image and tarnish his reputation.”

These facts have been utilised as part of the evidence that substantiates the failure of the seven EC officials in performing their duty, according to his lawyer.

In related developments, Jakkrit Thongsri, a Bhumjaithai Party MP for Buri Ram, was found to have declared a holding of 40,000 shares in iTV to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). The shares, along with other assets valued at 84.42 million baht, were declared at the end of his prior MP tenure, as per information published by the NACC.

Pita today was suspended from his role as an elected member of the House of Representatives by the Constitutional Court. To find out why click HERE.

Concrete catastrophe: Temple construction worker crushed to death in tragic accident

A tragic incident occurred at a temple construction site in Thailand when an unfortunate construction worker was fatally crushed by falling concrete while dismantling a mould from a temple gate.

The incident, which occurred around 10.30am today, claimed the life of a 59 year old worker named Da (surname reserved), instantly making the tranquil temple area a scene of chaos and distress.

Da, who was working on the construction of the gate of the temple in Kamphaeng Phet province at an elevated height of about 6 metres, was instantly killed on his wooden construction rack by a mass of fresh concrete that fell on his back.

An immediate investigation by Lieutenant Mongkhon Chitpunyakul, an investigative officer from Mueang Kamphaeng Phet Police Station, confirmed the cause of death. Da had wounds on the upper left side of his chest, likely caused by falling onto iron rods used for construction.

According to the contractor in charge of building the temple gate, 47 year old Somkhuan, the incident happened within a blink of an eye. As he was working in a nearby kitchen, he heard a loud cry and quickly rushed to the scene, only to find the man lying dead amidst construction debris.

Da had been attempting to dismantle the wooden shuttering around the concrete structure when the mishap occurred. Valiant attempts were made to remove the heavy slab of concrete from him, reported KhaoSod.

Somkhuan further revealed that Da initially tried to get up but blood was gushing from his wounds. It was determined that the man had fallen onto a piece of rebar, which pierced his chest. Even though immediate help was given, Da succumbed to his injuries on the spot. Another worker on the scene, 52 year old Kham, was also injured and transported to Kamphaeng Phet Hospital.

The temple gate, which has been under construction for almost two months, is yet to be completed.

A shocking revelation has caused widespread concern, as a Thai TikTok user shared her mother‘s harrowing experience of being shot by a neighbour, who was allegedly agitated by the noise of her motorcycle. The incident, which resulted in serious injuries to the victim, prompted a barrage of outcry in the online community.

In a video posted on Monday, a TikTok user called @palployyyy detailed the horrifying experience when her mother was shot three times by a male neighbour, leaving her with severe arm and leg injuries. According to the assailant, the incident started with him being irritated by the sound of the motorcycle.

What’s more alarming is that the perpetrator showed no remorse or apologies for causing harm, and was even heard asking…

    “Do you want another shot?”

Shockingly, the assailant was released on bail within 24 hours, adding more distress to the family. The TikTok user expressed her disbelief over the perceived injustice, admitting her limited legal knowledge and fearing that the situation may be swept under the carpet. Worried that her mother’s torment would go uncompensated, she sought to garner public attention and legal advice by making her story public, reported KhaoSod.

The post garnered significant responses from social media users who expressed concern for the safety of the TikTok user and offered advice on seeking legal recourse to ensure the guilty party is held accountable.

Some observers, however, suspect there may be more to the incident than just being disturbed by the motorcycle’s noise. The case remains unresolved and it was suggested both sides of the story need to be considered to establish the overall context of the unfortunate incident.

In a chilling turn of events, the wife of the gunman remarked that she had thought the victim was dead before the paramedics arrived. Love on the rocks: Thai woman’s 5 million baht loss leads to threats from scammer

A Thai woman approached the non-profit organisation Saimai Survive for help after she lost 5 million baht to a romance scammer and faced threats after she tried to distance herself from the violent swindler.

The 37 year old victim revealed to the Saimai Survive that she lost 5 million baht to the scammer in three months. The woman explained that she met the fraudulent trickster on a dating application in April of this year. The man was charming at first and flirted with her until she was convinced to meet him.

According to the victim, the man promised to help pay off her 800,000 baht debt. To gain her trust, the man claimed to possess not one but two bachelor’s degrees in economics and boasted of being a stock market investment expert with a lot of money deposited in a foreign bank.

The man convinced the victim to create some financial credit by buying a car and paying back her debt would be easier. She was convinced and bought the car even though she could not drive. Two weeks later, the man then suggested she bought another car, which she did.

The scammer persuaded her into borrowing money from several financial institutions and told her to borrow money from her friends and colleagues. He also urged her to buy expensive valuables and gold, which he kept.

As the victim slowly began to realise the scam, she attempted to distance herself from the shark. They engaged in several heated disputes, one of which saw her physically assaulted by the scammer. He then threatened her with violence again and said he would release explicit pictures and videos of her on social media. The man even turned up at her workplace to threaten her.

The woman disclosed that the scammer sold the two cars at a local car showroom in Pathum Thani province near Bangkok. She was left penniless and burdened with nearly 5 million baht of debt. She secretly moved to a new accommodation to escape from the scammer and sought help from Saimai Survive.

The founder of the non-profit organisation, Ekkaphop Lueangprasert, reported to the media that the victim has been struggling with bipolar disorder, and the scammer took this as a chance to control and manipulate her. The victim, in a state of fear, found herself paralysed, unable to regain control when faced with such menacing coercion.

Ekkaphop did not confirm whether the victim has reported the issue to the police.

Fraudster posing as Mirror Foundation officer to solicit funds arrested in Rayong

In a significant development, police apprehended a woman known as “the quack teacher.” The suspect falsely claimed to be an officer of the Mirror Foundation, a social development foundation. The woman claimed to be capable of enrolment into voluntary teaching services across the schools in the northeast of Thailand. She swindled schools into raising funds for construction and solicited money from the deceived parties. The suspect, who is two months pregnant, was arrested yesterday.

Police were instructed to investigate and execute the arrest as per the warrant issued by the Ubon Ratchathani court dated July 5. The charges include “forging official documents, using false documents, fraud by impersonation, and introducing fake computer data into a computer system likely to cause damage to others or the public.” Moreover, she was wanted for another order of the Rayong court issued yesterday, in case number 642/2022 and red case number 2335/2022 for fraud charges.

Twenty-eight year old Ratchadaphon was apprehended in front of Room 179/529 in Map Yang Phon, Pluak Daeng, in the eastern Rayong province, yesterday at 2pm.

Previously, officers at the Children and Women’s Welfare supervision of the Royal Thai Police were approached by Mirror Foundation officials regarding Ratchadaporn’s imposter act. To get enrolled as a voluntary assistant teacher, she was found duping people into believing her false identity through various pictures and clips on social media wearing a uniform of an assistant teacher in the northeastern schools. Consequently, she received registration charges posing as an officer of the Mirror Foundation, much to the disbelief of the victims, reported KhaoSod.

This created significant damage to the reputation of the Mirror Foundation and also duped various schools in the northeast to raise construction funds in Maha Sarakham province. At the onset of her pregnant state, she was indulging in a barbecue dinner when nabbed by the police from her hiding place at Pluak Daeng, Rayong.

Upon interrogation, she confessed to the allegations and her past arrests in the Chuen Chom Police Station, Maha Sarakham for “fraud, importing fake computer data into a computer system.” There was also a case against her in the Chiang Yuen Police Station, Maha Sarakham, for “intentional support in the performance of a crime, importing false or fake data.”

Currently, Ratchadaporn was hiding and working with her boyfriend in Rayong. A preliminary investigation led her to be taken to Samrong Police Station, Ubon Ratchathani to continue the legal proceedings.

The Children and Women’s Welfare division urges the citizens to stay alert of fraudulent claims of enrolment in the Mirror Foundation and advises them to confirm through the contact channels provided by the foundation at Hotline 061-909-1840.

  • 3 victims report vehicle theft and conning involving nearly 2 million baht

3 victims report vehicle theft and conning involving nearly 2 million baht

Three people reported a case of fraud and vehicle theft to the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) today. The case involved a hustler who claimed to be associated with local law enforcement in the Pak Chong district of the northeast Nakhon Ratchasima province.

The accused is alleged to have borrowed vehicles since 2020 under various pretences before running away with the vehicles. The fraud victims have tried to locate the accused without success. They are seeking police support for the arrest, and possibly the recovery of the vehicles. Cumulative losses amount to nearly 2 million baht (US$58,754). The accused is known as ‘Police Captain Ji’ or ‘Police Captain Jon.’

One man conned is a relative of the accused, who lent him a Mitsubishi Mirage in April based on a plea that his wife needed transportation for her childbirth-related errands. The lender later contacted him for the return of the vehicle, but the requests were evaded, leading to the eventual severance of communication.

Another victim, a soldier, was tricked similarly. The accused had posted on Facebook seeking vehicle bailouts. Upon contact, the soldier agreed to the terms and handed his car over. However, five months later, the vehicle was not returned, and several creditors of the accused were haunting the soldier for money. The accused deflected the inquiries before subsequently cutting off communication.

The accused wormed his way into another victim’s life through their sister, after which he borrowed a Toyota Yaris under the pretext of running an errand. The victim’s numerous attempts to reclaim the vehicle were to no avail, leaving the three victims burdened with the financial struggle to repay the vehicles’ finance agencies, reported Sanook.

Initially, the victims sought help from the precinct that the impersonator claimed allegiance to. This approach hit a dead-end when the chief officer disavowed any knowledge of the accused being on their team. The victims learned the accused had been relieved of his duty since 2016, prompting their attempt at the CIB to have the fraudster arrested and recover the stolen vehicles, Sanook reported.

Furthermore, a teacher from a school in the Don Mueang area in Bangkok was swindled by the accused. The teacher had pawned her car for 50,000 baht (US$1,470) on March 10 to a man known as Kai. After repaying her debt, she sought to retrieve her vehicle. However, it was claimed that it could not be released from the warehouse due to the Songkran festival and later because of the general elections. The accused cut off all communication afterwards.

Over four months have passed, yet the victims feel their case has been neglected as they note that neither arrest nor restraining orders have been issued against the accused. Thus, they request the CIB’s assistance to apprehend the fraudster, return their vehicles, and look into the pawnshop operator who refused to turn up despite being summoned by the police, supposedly due to his powerful local connections. They believe the pawnshop operator has many warrants issued against him for fraud.

The boy decided to pick up the bomb and was on the way to hand it over to the community leader when he stopped to play rattan ball (an Asian form of volleyball) with friends. Foolishly, he held the bomb in his hand while playing. The teenager then fell on the floor making the bomb explode. The explosion severely injured his left hand and he was rushed to the hospital.

The rescue team that facilitated the transport to the hospital speculated that the bomb was probably made by a teenage group from outside of the community. One rescuer disclosed that a few nights prior to the incident, a group of teenagers on motorcycles visited the scene at midnight. Residents reported hearing several explosions that night.

After the accident, the school and community leader monitored the area and encountered a group of teenagers at midnight. However, the group immediately left the scene after realising that they were being observed.

Channel 3 reported that the teenagers came from another community in an attempt to attack teenagers in this area. Prior to this regrettable incident, conflicting messages had been exchanged between members of the two groups on social media, though these exchanges have since been deleted.

The accident raised awareness of the safety of the student evoking memories of a recent gas cylinder explosion at a school in Bangkok last month. The explosion occurred during a fire drill which ended up killing one of the students watching the assignment. Five others were also injured.

  • Thai tourism minister proposes bolstering sector for sustainable tourism

Thai tourism minister proposes bolstering sector for sustainable tourism

To boost the national economy, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Minister, has put forth a proposal to prioritise tourism as a national agenda, with a focus on making Thailand a destination for sustainable tourism. He strongly encourages his successor to continue this endeavour.

Phiphat’s aspirations don’t end there, as he also suggested elevating the status of the tourism ministry, transforming it into a key economic establishment.

“Thailand doesn’t have time to restart from zero. The tourism industry needs a drive from everybody to run faster and be able to compete with other countries.”

Sanctioned by the National Tourism Policy Committee, the proposed plan presents both immediate and long-term strategies. It also calls for cross-agency collaboration involving multiple ministries and agencies, Bangkok Post reported.

For example, the Ministry of Natural Resources is expected to join forces in the venture of harnessing tourism potential within national parks. Meanwhile, the Tourism Department has been given the task to utilise technology in improving its operator enlisted system to enhance service quality.

In line with this ambition, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) set a goal to augment the tourism sector’s contribution to the national GDP by 25% by 2027. This is in anticipation of approximately 70 million foreign tourists.

Phiphat further stated that future policies should involve targeting global sports events and festivals making Thailand a go-to hub for sports, events, and leisure, thereby, increasing average tourist stays and promoting wealth distribution within local communities.

In pursuit of realising Thailand as a sustainable tourism hotspot, initiatives that have introduced low-carbon tourism in Southern Thailand, specifically in Phangnga and Krabi, should persist.

However, the 300 baht tourism fee may be subject to further postponement due to ongoing preparations regarding collection methods by relevant organisations.

The minister also stated that the decision to extend the closing time of night entertainment venues to 4am in specific areas, as suggested by his ministry, falls under the purview of the forthcoming Cabinet.

Speaking at the annual strategic direction conference held by TAT, Deputy Governor for Domestic Marketing, Thapanee Kiatphaibool, who is set to succeed as governor come September, said TAT is setting its sights on new promising markets such as Eastern Europe and Saudi Arabia to propel the market forward in the next year.

In addition to promoting Thailand as an eco-friendly destination, she highlighted plans to ensure the fair distribution of tourism wealth to local communities and secondary cities.

Thapanee further mentioned the agency’s intent to provide seamless travel experiences by connecting land and air travel to lure tourists from China through Laos via high-speed trains, and from Malaysia using land borders.

In a bid to stimulate the domestic market, the agency has planned year-round promotions to display distinctive regional identities, she added.

  • Forward no more: MFP leader Pita Limjaroenrat suspended from Parliament duty by Constitutional Court (video)

Forward no more: MFP leader Pita Limjaroenrat suspended from Parliament duty by Constitutional Court (video)

Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of the Move Forward Party (MFP) and a candidate for the prime ministerial position, has been suspended from his role as an elected member of the House of Representatives by the Constitutional Court.

The court’s decision came after accepting a complaint regarding Pita’s ownership of shares in the now-defunct media company, iTV Plc. According to the constitution, Parliamentarians are prohibited from holding stocks in media organizations.

The 42 year old MFP leader argued that the 42,000 shares were part of his late father’s estate, which he managed as the executor. He claimed that the ownership had been transferred to relatives since then.

Despite the suspension from Parliament duty, the Bangkok-born politician remains eligible for nomination as prime minister, which was also being discussed during a joint sitting today.

The case was brought before the Constitutional Court last week, as reported by the Bangkok Post. The Election Commission had recommended to the court that Pita be stripped of his MP status due to his shareholding in a media company. Additionally, the commission requested his suspension from MP duties until the court’s ruling.

The Constitutional Court today announced that its judges unanimously agreed to accept the case. Furthermore, by a vote of seven to two, they decided to immediately suspend Pita from his MP duties until the ruling is delivered. The suspension was deemed necessary to avoid potential legal issues, objections, and disputes that could hinder the functioning of the House and Parliament.

The court instructed Pita to provide his explanation within 15 days after receiving a copy of the ruling. The situation has garnered significant attention as it could have implications for Pita’s political future and the leadership of the MFP.

Several Thai senators yesterday announced they are processing legal action against all those who insulted and threatened them after they blocked MFP leader Pita’s path to becoming prime minister. A bizarre move considering those senators are subverting the course of democracy and the will of the people of Thailand.

  • Phuket ravaged by extreme weather causing traffic chaos and safety concerns

Phuket ravaged by extreme weather causing traffic chaos and safety concerns

Extreme weather conditions are continuing to wreak havoc in Phuket. Ferocious winds toppled numerous trees, resulting in significant blockages yesterday. These unexpected weather conditions have caused travel disruption across the island and two cleanup teams have been dispatched to counter the impact.

A sizeable tree that fell on Soi Vachira, near Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket Town, was one of the major obstructions reported. It took several hours for municipal workers to safely clear the heavy tree, allowing a return to normal traffic movement in the area. Other areas were similarly affected with fallen trees damaging homes and blocking roads, a real hindrance for the local communities as recorded by the Phuket Information Center.

Since yesterday, the heavy rainfall and robust wind waves have been of concern, with a weather advisory warning issued by the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD). This warning was re-emphasised today by Wirote, an official from the TMD Southern Meteorological Center, who underlines the urgency of the prevailing situation, reported The Phuket News. Wirote wrote…

“During July 19 and 20, the rather strong southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea and southern Thailand’s west coast. For this reason, the abundance of rain and heavy rain to very heavy rain will occur in some areas.”

That being the case, precautions should be taken particularly in the provinces of Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang, and Satun.

The forecast predicts that waves in the Andaman Sea could reach heights between 2 and 3 metres and even surpass 3 metres in areas of thundershowers. It is strongly advised that all vessels should avoid these and similar areas as small boats are particularly at risk, an urge put forward by Wirote.

In light of this, officers from the Marine Department have commenced vigils at crucial piers throughout Phuket to make certain marine safety measures are strictly adhered to. The TMD Southern Meteorological Center anticipates further isolated thundershowers to affect around 80% of the island today, accompanied by gusts of wind potentially reaching speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour.

For ensuring swift drainage in Phuket Town, pumps have been placed at three primary locations. The flow rate of the Bang Yai Canal, a key water flow route in Phuket Town, remains under observation.

Safety advice for tourists isn’t being neglected. The primary Tourist Assistance Center for Phuket is recommending that beach visitors comply with the instructions signalled by red flags at various spots. These indicate areas where lifeguards consider the water to be unsafe for swimming, and ignoring these warnings could entail severe risks to personal safety.

Thai entrepreneur hosts 10 million baht funeral spectacle in honour of parents

In an extravagant affair, a local entrepreneur, known for his tent rental business, laid out an impressive funeral ceremony for his late parents in Thailand. The funeral, which cost over 10 million baht, featured a five-tiered, nine-peak funeral pyre, sparking intrigue and awe in all those who attended.

The event, hosted in Jula Manee Temple’s parking area yesterday, was unexpectedly luxurious considering it was for ordinary citizens.

The elaborate funeral ceremony at Amphawa in Samut Songkhram, southwest of Bangkok, was adorned with vibrant lights and boasted an entertainment line-up featuring artists from all over Thailand.

The merriment ensued for five consecutive nights from July 16 to July 20, across two concert stages, captivating villagers who had never witnessed such grandeur at an average citizen’s funeral. Spectacular festive lights were installed over an area greater than five acres, and brilliant bulbs were set up along the Samut Songkhram-Bang Pa-In route, spanning over 8 kilometres.

Looking back, the host of this extravagant yet humbling funeral event, known as “Pron Julha Duang Maeklong,” born Sanit Limjijong, reveals his modest beginnings. Born with a disability causing the loss of his left arm, he initially found employment in movie dubbing before venturing into the tent rental business. He expanded his services from stage and sound system rentals to hosting full-scale events, all while maintaining strong ties with artists across the country, reported KhaoSod.

Whilst acknowledging the grandeur of the funeral, Sanit explained he didn’t intend the event to be lavish, but rather fitting for his status. Help from friends and contacts amassed over the years turned the event into an extravaganza. He said…

“All of this, from the grandeur to the celebration, is the result of a humble desire to honour my parents to the best of my capabilities.”

Sanit said that his humble origins and current success, backed by the generosity of friends in various fields, make him proud. He added that the funeral was attended by many prominent individuals, including artists and stars across various spectrums, who offered their time and talent for free.

Sanit revealed that it took the blessing of the venerable monk, Luang Phor It, of Julha Manee Temple, and other officials to grant permission to set up the venue. He said they helped in orchestrating the magnificent event.

The ceremony, which saw attendance from a plethora of monks from numerous temples, mirrored the unity and support of local communities and religious bodies. The participation and contributions from all sectors consolidated the funeral’s success, honouring an ordinary man’s extraordinary tribute to his parents.

Thai man murdered and left on roadside in Isaan, suspect remains at large

A local discovered a dead Thai man about 500 metres from a police station by the side of the Baan Lakchai Road in the Baan Kruat district of the Isaan province of Burriram.

Officers from Non Charoen Police Station and medical officers from the Baan Kruat Hospital were notified of the dead Thai man, later identified as 55 year old Team Mantalung. He was found lying face up, covered with leaves, and wearing a red shirt with long jeans.

Officers came across a wooden stick near the body, which was visibly stained with blood. The presence of the object, along with wounds found on Team’s body, led the police to suspect that he was murdered. Officers are now investigating fingerprints left on the wooden stick.

The deceased’s uncle, 62 year old Lue Mantalung, revealed that his nephew divorced his wife 20 years ago and had been living alone ever since. He was addicted to alcohol but never had problems with anyone in the community.

The local man who found his body, 55 year old Young Puengsakun, was riding a bicycle to his rice field and noticed a pair of shoes on the road. Upon further inspection, he also observed a broken glass bottle and a mound of leaves nearby.

Young decided to investigate further and closely examined the pile of leaves, revealing the disturbing sight of two legs protruding from within.

Young added that he did not know the dead Thai man in person but often saw him drinking alcohol at a local grocery shop in the community. One day before the discovery of his death, Young stated that he saw Team at a funeral in the community.

The funeral host, 70 year old Kaen Gonesamran, confirmed that Team was at the funeral and that he also engaged in a gambling activity with others after the ceremony. Kaen said that he woke up at 3am to clean the house and noticed Team was sitting in front of the house and looked drunk.

According to Kaen, Team disappeared and returned to his house again at 4am accompanied by another man named Diao. Kaen overheard Diao reproaching Team saying…

“I bought you beer and liquor as you wanted. Why do you still bother me?”

Shortly thereafter, both individuals vanished from Kaen’s sight, with Diao later reappearing with a bloodstain on his leg. Kaen questioned Diao about the blood but received no response before Diao vanished once more.

Police officers are currently reviewing security camera footage from the areas and nearby to track down the murderer.

  • Foodland pivots strategy targeting younger generations with Grocerant convenience outlets

Foodland pivots strategy targeting younger generations with Grocerant convenience outlets

Established supermarket chain Foodland Supermarket Co implements fresh business tactics to allure the younger generations whilst partnering with property developers to inaugurate convenience outlets on housing and condominium sites.

Embracing this revamped strategy, the firm has tied up within SC Asset Corporation subsidiaries, leasing out space and debuting two novel ‘Grocerant’ outlets, a subsidiary retail label within the Foodland Group, within a pair of condo projects situated in Bangkok‘s Wong Wian Yai and Ratchadaphisek, requiring an investment of 15 million baht for each store location.

Leveraging the Grocerant concept, which is a union of features common to convenience stores and the offerings of the Took Lae Dee (good quality at affordable prices) restaurant, the company offers ready-made meals under one roof. This lesser retail structure, spanning a 200 square metre space, is primarily channelling the attention of new-gen customers inhabiting condos and neighbouring areas.

Atipol Teerahsongkran, the firm’s vice president, said…

“We’ve been established for 51 years in the market and our core customers are typically within the age range of late 30s to 50s. Therefore, we intend to attract younger generation customers by collaborating with mid to high-end property developers to expand our Grocerant stores in the future.”

In response to labour scarcity, significantly post the Covid-19 pandemic onslaught, the company pivotally altered its plans, opting to inaugurate only two fresh Foodland supermarket stores each year, deviating from its initial plan of opening three to five new shops annually. The retail sector ceased to be a lucrative career prospect for job hunters, which in turn led to employee attrition rates spiking to approximately 1,000 people, equating to 40% of the aggregate workforce annually, making it strenuous to train an ample number of employees to fill in the vacant spots.

The firm strategies the launch of merely two new Foodland supermarket shops this year, one of which was introduced yesterday at the Park Silom project in Silom, entailing an investment sum of 60 million baht.

Spanning a generous 1,750 square metres, the company’s 24th store debut with a sophisticated shopping experience concept, catering to the urban lifestyle of the current generation with over 13,000 quality goods, sourced domestically as well as imported.

Atipol underscored the company’s goal of enticing modern customers, encompassing working sector professionals, parents collecting their children, and tourists, with a preliminary objective of drawing in 1,500 visitors daily and generating monthly revenues of 20 million baht. The Park Silom store houses both a supermarket and the Took Lae Dee restaurant styled in an opulent modern design to target clients residing in the bustling city centre.

As contemporary and newer generation customers possess a clear understanding and knowledge of their requirements about product selection, Foodland furnishes comprehensive details on multiple product categories, with specialised experts on stand-by to provide assistance and impart requisite knowledge.

Furthermore, the company has plans to invest 50 million baht towards the inauguration of an additional Foodland supermarket in August at the Icon 56 community mall project on Sai Mai Road, a residential area spanning 1,500 square metres, reported Bangkok Post.

In financial projections, the company foresees a 5% revenue growth in 2023, as compared to the preceding year’s revenue which crossed 5 billion baht.

According to Atipol, Foodland sets its sight on opening two more Foodland supermarkets in Bangkok the next year, with a collective investment of 80 million baht, alongside two Grocerant convenience stores, necessitating a cumulative cost of 30 million baht.

Additionally, they plan to allocate 40 million baht towards renovating their existing supermarkets in the Lat Phrao and Ramkhamhaeng areas in Bangkok.

  • Final suspect in Thai counterfeit bond scam apprehended by OIG

Final suspect in Thai counterfeit bond scam apprehended by OIG

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) apprehended the final suspect involved in a counterfeit bond scheme. The gang collaborated with fraudulent money-lenders to deceive prominent owners of guesthouse businesses, by soliciting payment for the approval of large loans. This culminated in the arrest of 64 year old man yesterday under the charge of currency counterfeiting.

The arrested individual, Thanakrit, is accused of conniving with three other individuals identified only by their first names – Hongyok, Santinan, and Napat. The accomplices managed to convincingly orchestrate a plot against Thanakrit to gain his trust.

Once aware that Thanakrit needed capital for renovating his guesthouse, they assured him that they had connections with a group of investors who could lend large sums of money. The only condition is a pre-emptive service fee needed to be paid to this investor group. A contract negotiation was scheduled at a hotel near Vibhavadi Rangsit Road in Bangkok.

During the meeting, these fraudsters displayed government bonds worth 600 million baht (US$17,584,992) to evince their financial credibility. Tricked by this charade, the victim agreed to transfer 840,000 baht (US$24,619) as a service fee. Post transaction, the victim failed to secure the agreed-upon loan. Suspecting foul play, he decided to verify the government bond numbers with Thailand’s central bank, only to discover they were forged, reported KhaoSod.

All these accusations were carefully manipulated to deceive the victim, who then reported the case to the OIG. This led to the arrest of three accomplices, followed by the recent apprehension of the main suspect, Thanakrit. During the investigation, Thanakrit denied all charges against him and was forwarded to the 4th Investigation Division of the OIG for further proceedings.

  • Sustainability investment doubled by Thai union to benefit oceans and communities

Sustainability investment doubled by Thai union to benefit oceans and communities

Unrelenting in his pursuit of sustainability, Thiraphong Chansiri, CEO of Thai Union Group PCL, a dominant player in the global seafood manufacturing scene, divulged pivotal advancements in the company’s ecological strategy.

Always at the forefront of advocating sustainable business practices, Thiraphong explained the profound pressure on our oceans, harbouring the livelihood and sustenance of up to 600 million people, particularly in lesser developed nations. He is of the firm belief that an escalation in the company’s sustainability goals is an urgent necessity.

Thai Union initially introduced SeaChange in 2016, seeing a colossal investment of US$100 million set aside to revolutionise the seafood sector. This pioneering endeavour has since doubled, climbing to a staggering US$200 million, equal to the Thai Union’s total 2022 net profit of 7.2 billion baht. The amplified funds are expected to expedite the SeaChange initiative’s ambitious objectives for the decade leading to 2030.

Thiraphong made clear his understanding of the urgency. He said…

“This significant investment is not just an expense; it is truly for all stakeholders. It is the key to safeguarding our collective sustainable future.”

He elaborates on the worsening state of the environment, proclaiming that the time for transformative change is now imminent. SeaChange 2030 is emblematic of this new era of ambitious, planet-saving objectives that will restructure the worldwide seafood value chain.

Ambitious in its plan, SeaChange 2030 seeks to invigorate not only the ecosystem but the very communities that rely upon it. Thiraphong believes the well-being of the people must be prioritised equally to sustainable sourcing and operations. This goal is aligned with 10 of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals to ensure a resilient seafood industry.

Thai Union’s chief sustainability officer, Adam Brennan, made note of their climate action commitment.

“Thailand has set itself on a course to achieve net zero by 2065. Realising that the food industry accounts for 26% of global greenhouse gas emissions, Thai Union Group plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 42% across its production process and supply chain by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The company’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are supporting the government’s own net zero goal.”

The company has also broadened its environmentally conscious sourcing pledge beyond simply tuna, its primary focus since 2016. Thai Union will ensure that all its harvested seafood is responsibly sourced or from fisheries associated with improvement programs.

Shrimp production will be in the spotlight to mitigate its ecological impact and meet industry standards in welfare and working conditions. With over 22,000 shrimp farms in Thailand alone, the Thai Union is keen to collaborate only with suppliers that remain committed to the goals of traceability, environmental protection and fair treatment of workers.

Furthermore, the Thai Union aims to achieve 100% sustainable packaging for its branded products by 2025 and advocates for 60% of private label products by 2030. Displacement of 1,500 tonnes of ocean-bound plastic through preventative and mitigative measures will also be at the forefront of their efforts.

The company’s dedication to its labour force is no less significant. The objective is to achieve gender equality at the management level and ensure adherence to responsible labour practices in all their sourcing vessels and farms. An Ethical Migrant Recruitment Policy is in place to ensure a safe and fair recruitment journey for migrant workers, stressing the protection of not only the employees but also those in the supply chain.

Thai Union’s commendable contributions to sustainability have earned them consistent recognition by institutions like the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices, marking the ninth consecutive year in 2022, reported Bangkok Post. Thiraphong said…

“Our commitment to sustainability goes beyond customers and investors; it is now a fundamental aspect of the company’s identity.

“In an ever-changing world, marked by climate challenges like hot climates, droughts and floods, Thai Union is dedicated to aligning with the environment’s overall well-being, striving to be the world’s most trusted seafood company.”

  • Bhumjaithai Party MP found holding iTV shares, investigation called

Bhumjaithai Party MP found holding iTV shares, investigation called

Thai news agencies and locals were quick to highlight the fact that Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of the Move Forward Party (MFP), owned shares in the media company iTV. However, it appears that Pita is not the only politician with such holdings. Bhumjaithai Party MP Jakkrit Thongsi also possesses 40,000 shares in a media company.

The Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) publicly disclosed the assets and liabilities of politicians in anticipation of 100 MPs stepping down to make way for newly elected representatives. Of particular interest to the Thai media were the iTV shares held by Jakkrit, a member of the Bhumjaithai Party.

Jakkrit currently serves as the representative for the 7th district of Burriram province. However, during the 2023 General Election, he won as an MP for the 10th district of the same province.

According to the NACC’s report, Jakkrit and his wife, Suppajira Thongsi, declared total assets worth 84 million baht, with no outstanding debts. Jakkrit revealed that his annual income amounts to approximately 5.8 million baht, while his wife earns 1.14 million baht per year.

Among his assets, Jakkrit holds shares in two companies. He possesses 41.58 million units in Property Perfect, valued at 16.6 million baht, and 40,000 units in iTV, which are currently assessed as having no value.

Following the disclosure of this information, numerous netizens called on the relevant authorities to investigate Jakkrit, just as they did in Pita’s case.

Jakkrit later reassured news agencies that he had transferred the shares to his cousin in 2018, prior to participating in the 2019 General Election. He staunchly maintained his innocence and expressed his willingness to clarify the situation in court.

Jakkrit clarified that the iTV shares remained in his NACC account because they could neither be transferred nor sold on the stock market due to the company’s status. Even though he possessed over 40,000 units, their worth amounted to zero baht. What he had done was create an official document detailing the transfer of shares to his cousin. Jakkrit said…

“I am not concerned about being investigated. I completed the official documentation in 2018, and the transfer was finalized. Furthermore, the shares hold no value, and I cannot sell them. Even if I were to sell them, no one would be interested in buying. If anyone wishes to lodge a complaint against me, I am prepared to defend myself. I am ready to publicly present the documentation and willingly cooperate with the legal process.”

Meanwhile, the investigation into Pita’s media share case is still ongoing. Pita’s lawyer, Yongyuth Saokaewsatit, subsequently initiated legal action against Ittiporn Boonpakong, the president of the Election Commission (EC), and seven other officials. Yongyuth accused the EC of attempting to defame Pita. The court has taken the case under consideration, but no further updates have been announced at this time.

  • Storm hits Trang, uprooted tree traps bedridden woman in her home

Storm hits Trang, uprooted tree traps bedridden woman in her home

As storms lashed the district of Kantang in the southern Trang province last night, emergency services were called to rescue a 78 year old bedridden woman and her family. The disastrous weather resulted in a 100 year old banyan tree falling on their residence and trapping them inside. The rescue operation was coordinated with local authorities under the leadership of the Mayor of Kantang.

Emergency service personnel and the Kantang district’s rescue unit promptly rushed to offer aid to Thavorn Sankhong, a 78 year old woman who was trapped within her dwelling at 40/18 Rod Fai Road, Kantang, Trang. Trapped alongside her were her spouse and daughter. The entrance was blocked by debris and branches from the fallen tree, and the team had to struggle to reach the family. Katang Mayor Soranon Chirochmontri commanded operations at the scene, which was densely populated and had multiple houses in proximity.

The large tree, uprooted by the violent storm, collapsed onto several houses and an electric pole, resulting in several hanging electric wires. Local electricity authorities were rushed to disconnect the power supply, as it posed a threat to rescuers and inhabitants. It took approximately 30 minutes, but they managed to safely evacuate the terrified elderly woman who, besides being wheelchair-bound, is also completely blind. She, her spouse and her daughter were luckily not injured.

Subsequently, the family was assisted to relocate, temporarily dwelling at another home nearby.

Upon further exploration, another neighbouring house that had been gifted as a royal grant, numbered 9801, had sustained considerable damage. Two inhabitants of this house, a 25 year old woman and a 70 year old woman, a grandmother and granddaughter respectively, sustained injuries to their heads due to the damaged building’s debris and were urgently rushed to Kantang Hospital, reported KhaoSod.

Orapin Sae-Kow, the 43 year old daughter of the bedridden elderly woman, said…

“We were alerted when the rain started to pour heavily, followed by an aggressive storm. Not long after, we heard the sound of the large tree crashing into our house, destroying it and turning off the electricity instantly. My bedridden mother, father, and I were stuck inside as the house debris, and tree branches blocked our exit.”

    Mayor Soranon said…

“The severe windstorm resulted in significant damage to approximately ten points within the city. However, the heaviest damage was caused in this neighbourhood, predominantly due to the presence of a bedridden individual. Despite the significant time taken to safely extract the individual, primarily because of the endangering live electric cables, relief was finally provided. An estimation and inspection of the damages will be executed tomorrow.”

This night, the inhabitants must endure the darkness using torches and candles. Their treasured possessions remain stuck within their houses, as the unstable structure presents the risk of collapsing further. At present, the extent of the damage remains to be estimated.
