Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station in northern Thailand arrested a man impersonating a police officer after he sent lewd pictures of his penis to women on social media.

A netizen took to a local Chiang Mai Facebook group to share a picture of the suspect and warned women to stay away from him because he randomly sent explicit pictures to many women. The man was believed to be a cop because his profile picture showed him in a police uniform.

The Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station responded to the issue and launched an investigation to identify the suspect, as his actions damaged the reputation and good image of the Royal Thai Police (RTP).

The investigation revealed that the social media account allegedly belonged to a 50 year old Thai man named Damrong Khampin, who was not a police officer. Officers arrested Damrong on August 6 at a flower market in the Phrao district of Chiang Mai.

Police searched his home and found a volunteer police officer’s uniform. Damrong still kept and wore the uniform even though he had been removed from the position a few years ago due to inappropriate behaviour. He was working at the flower market at the time of his arrest.

Damrong admitted to his actions, claiming that a woman tricked him into sending explicit pictures to her and later blackmailed him. This disappointment led him to distribute his lewd pictures of his penis to many women online. He did not consider the impact on the RTP.

Damrong also confessed that he admired the police profession and wanted to wear the uniform but never had the chance. He took many pictures in the volunteer police uniform and posted them on social media, causing locals to misunderstand.

Damrong expressed his apologies to the officers of the Mueang Chiang Mai Police Station and the RTP for the damage caused to the organisations.

In a related incident last month, a Thai woman filed a complaint against a police officer who groped her inside a nightclub in Pattaya. The Mueang Pattaya Police Station investigated the case and found that the person who sexually assaulted her was not a police officer. There has been no update on whether the suspect was arrested for his actions.
