15 minor earthquakes shake Pai district in Mae Hong Son

A series of 15 minor earthquakes impacted the Pai district in Mae Hong Son province from Sunday evening, January 19 through yesterday afternoon.

The Earthquake Observation Division of the Meteorological Department of Thailand reported these events took place in Wiang Nuea subdistrict, Pai district, between 9.56pm on Sunday and 3.46pm yesterday, January 20.

The earthquakes registered magnitudes between 1.7 and 3.4 on the Richter scale. Residents of Pai noted feeling tremors of 2.7 magnitude and above. The quakes were recorded at depths ranging from 1 to 2 kilometres underground. The most significant tremor, with a magnitude of 3.4, occurred at 11.57pm, closely followed by a 3.3 magnitude quake at 12.08am yesterday.

The most recent earthquakes, with magnitudes of 2.2 and 2.5 on the Richter scale, were recorded at 1.39pm and 3.46pm yesterday. The Earthquake Observation Division identified these tremors as resulting from the movement along the Wiang Haeng fault line beneath Chiang Mai province, reported Bangkok Post.

Other earthquakes in the northern region of Thailand include a 4.5-magnitude earthquake that shook six northern provinces in June 2023, including Phitsanulok, Phichit, and Kamphaeng Phet. Residents reported feeling the tremor, but no significant damage was reported.

In 2022, a series of earthquakes struck Myanmar’s Shan State and Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand. The earthquakes began at around 11.30pm July 21 and as of 7am the next day, a total of 47 tremors ranging in magnitude from 2.4 to 6.4 on the Richter scale had occurred. The strongest earthquake which measured 6.4 on the Richter scale occurred at 12.06am.
In September of the same year, a 3.6 magnitude earthquake struck Fang district in Chiang Mai province. No injuries, deaths or damages were reported. The earthquake’s epicentre in the Mae Kha subdistrict had a considerably shallow depth of 4 kilometres, causing people in the region to feel strong shaking.
Strong shaking was reported in Mae Kha, Chai Prakan and Mae Ngon subdistricts and tremors were felt 100 kilometres south in Mueang Chiang Mai.
