Swimming, tourist boats banned at Phi Phi Island due to rough seas
Officials have temporarily banned swimming and tourist boats at Phi Phi Island due to strong winds and rough seas. Officials have placed red flags along the beaches in Koh Phai, Ao Nang subdistrict, Mueang Krabi district, and other marine tourist areas to ensure safety.
This decision was made yesterday, January 12, following continuous strong winds in the afternoon. Emergency personnel, life-saving equipment, and patrol boats are on standby to assist immediately if any incidents occur at sea.
The Southern Meteorological Centre (West Coast) issued a warning about a strong northeastern monsoon covering the Gulf of Thailand, the southern region, and the Andaman Sea. This weather pattern is causing heavy rain in some areas of the south.
In the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, waves are expected to be strong, reaching 2 to 4 metres. In areas experiencing thunderstorms, waves could exceed 4 metres.
Meanwhile, in the Andaman Sea, waves are anticipated to be 1 to 2 metres high, increasing to 2 to 3 metres offshore. Thunderstorm areas might see waves over 3 metres.
Mariners in these regions are advised to navigate cautiously and avoid sailing in stormy conditions. Residents along the southeastern coast of Thailand should be cautious of waves impacting the shore, reported KhaoSod.
It is recommended that sailors in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea refrain from venturing out to sea until January 13.
In related news, the Thai Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) today, January 13, issued a weather forecast indicating a further drop in temperatures across Thailand, with Bangkok experiencing lows of 16 degrees Celsius and strong winds. The upper northern and northeastern regions are expected to see cold to very cold weather, with the highest areas experiencing even colder temperatures.
The department advises residents in these regions to take health precautions due to the drop in temperature and to be wary of potential fire hazards due to dry and windy conditions.
