Storm surge fears grip flood-prone neighbourhoods amid widespread alerts

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) today issued a weather warning, predicting thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across 46 provinces in Thailand, including significant downpours in Bangkok, affecting 70% of the area. Residents are cautioned against possible flash floods and sudden flooding, particularly in hilly regions and areas near water flow paths.

In the next 24 hours, the southern and upper regions of Thailand are expected to experience thunderstorms and isolated heavy rain. The southwestern winds affecting the country contribute to this weather pattern.

The Andaman Sea is experiencing moderate waves, with heights ranging from 1 to 2 metres and higher in stormy areas. Fishermen in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea are advised to proceed with caution and avoid areas with thunderstorms.

The northern region will see thunderstorms in about 60% of the area, with some heavy rain expected in provinces like Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Tak, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun. Temperatures will range between 22 and 26°C and 32 and 38°C, with southwestern winds at 5 to 15 kilometres per hour.

The northeastern region will also experience thunderstorms in 60% of the area, mainly in Loei, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Surin, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani. Temperatures will hover between 23 and 25°C and 32 and 35°C, with southeast winds at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.

In the central region, 70% of the area will experience thunderstorms, with heavy rain in provinces such as Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi, Suphan Buri, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon, and Samut Songkhram. Temperatures are expected to be between 24 and 26°C and 33 and 35°C, with southern winds at 10 and 20 kilometres per hour.

The eastern region will similarly have thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with heavy rain expected in Nakhon Nayok, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, and Chanthaburi. Temperatures will range from 24 to 26°C and 32 to 34°C, with southern winds at 15 to 30 kilometres per hour. The sea will have waves approximately 1 metre high, increasing to over 2 metres in stormy areas.

The southern region (eastern coast) is forecasted to have thunderstorms in 70% of the area, including heavy rain in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Songkhla.

Temperatures will vary between 24 and 25°C and 32 and 35°C, with southwestern winds at 15 to 30 kilometres per hour. The sea will have waves about 1 metre high, with over 2 metres in stormy areas.

On the western coast of the South, similar conditions are expected, with thunderstorms affecting 70% of the area and heavy rain in Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, and Krabi.

Temperatures will be from 24 to 25°C and 32 to 35°C, with southwestern winds at 15 to 35 kilometres per hour. Sea conditions include waves ranging from 1 to 2 metres, increasing in stormy areas, reported KhaoSod.

Bangkok and the surrounding areas will experience thunderstorms in 70% of the region, with some heavy rain expected. Temperatures will range between 24 and 25°C and 32 and 33°C, with southern winds at 10 to 20 kilometres per hour.
