Thailand braces for summer storms with severe weather warnings

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has forecast rain across all regions of Thailand today, May 1, with the north and northeast especially facing increased risks of summer storms.

Thunderstorms, strong winds, hail, and lightning are expected in certain areas, potentially causing severe weather conditions. Residents are advised to be wary of potential flooding or flash floods.

The weather conditions are influenced by a high-pressure area from China, affecting Vietnam and the South China Sea, leading to southeasterly and southwesterly winds over the upper parts of the north and northeast.

While the upper regions of Thailand generally experience hot weather, western wind waves from Myanmar move into the north and upper northeast. The south, however, is experiencing reduced rainfall due to easterly winds covering the Gulf of Thailand, the southern region, and the Andaman Sea.

Dust and haze accumulation in the north and northeast is currently rated from slight to moderate, with a stable trend due to the possibility of rain in some areas. The weather forecast for today is as follows:

In the north, thunderstorms will affect 60% of the area, with strong winds and isolated heavy rain and hail in provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Kamphaeng Phet, Tak, Phitsanulok, Phichit, and Phetchabun.
