Two Thailand population reports reveal conflicting data

Statistics provided by the Central Domicile Registration Office revealed that on December 31, 2022, Thailand’s official population stands at 66,090,475. The Worldometer elaboration of the latest United Nations data contradicts this however, saying it is over 70 million residents.

Last year, an announcement formally published in the Royal Gazette stated that the official population of Thailand as of December 31, 2021, was 66,171,439, meaning there are 80,964 fewer people in the country than last year.

Out of 66.09 million people in Thailand last year, 65.1 million are Thai citizens while about 984,000 are non-Thai nationals, reported Thai PBS.

The population is divided roughly equally between males and females, with approximately 33.3 million being female and 31.7 million being male. Among non-Thai nationals, there are approximately 515,600 males and 468,000 females.

Bangkok’s capital city is the most populous area in Thailand, with almost 5.5 million residents. This population data is used by various organizations to plan and implement policies, including the allocation of seats in the general election.

Based on the latest population figures, it is possible that as many as 43 provinces, including Bangkok, could see an increase of 1-3 seats in the upcoming election. However, the final decision rests with the Election Commission.

These figures on the Worldometer elaboration of the latest United Nations data contradict this a little.

They state the current population of Thailand is 70,239,740 as of yesterday, Sunday, January 8.

According to UN data Thailand, 2020 population is estimated at 69,799,978 people.

Thailand’s population accounts for roughly 0.9% of the global population, making it the 20th most populous country in the world. The population density in Thailand is 137 people per square kilometre or approximately 354 people per square mile.

The country has a total land area of 510,890 square kilometres or 197,256 square miles.

Approximately 51.1% of the population in Thailand lives in urban areas, with a total of 35,698,325 people living in cities and towns in 2020.

The median age in Thailand is 40.1 years, which means that half of the population is older than 40.1 years and half is younger.
