A letter urging the prompt signing of the Cannabis Act has been submitted to Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. The Shaping the Future of Thai Cannabis network, led by spokesperson Chokwan Chopaka, delivered the letter, which was received by mass communication expert Pansak Charoen.

The letter stressed the Thai premier’s previous commitment to regulating cannabis through specific legislation, particularly the Cannabis Act, rather than reverting to controversial proposals to recriminalise cannabis. These earlier proposals faced significant public opposition and have since been shelved.

According to the network, at least three versions of the Cannabis Act have passed the House of Representatives and are awaiting the 62 year old prime minister’s signature to move forward in the legislative process. The group expressed frustration over the delay, pointing out that once the Bangkok-born prime minister has set a direction, further postponements could prolong legislative processes and exacerbate ongoing issues.

The letter urged the prime minister to expedite the legislative process to ensure that the Cannabis Act aligns with his regulatory vision.

The delay in signing the bills has raised concerns about potential political motives, hindering progress and causing frustration among advocates for cannabis regulation. The network called for a dignified and straightforward approach to enacting cannabis regulation, aiming for the full legalisation and regulation of cannabis in Thailand.

The network emphasised the importance of swift action, stating that prolonged delays could lead to recurring issues and undermine the legislative process.

The call to action from the network for Shaping the Future of Thai Cannabis highlights the urgent need for clear and decisive leadership on this issue. The group seeks to ensure that the Cannabis Act is enacted promptly, reflecting the prime minister’s strategy and the will of the House of Representatives, reported the Pattaya News.

In related news, the Thai PM is considering inviting US Ambassador Robert F. Godec to observe anti-drug operations in the northern region of Thailand. During a recent discussion, the Thai prime minister highlighted an increase in the distribution of methamphetamine pills and heroin in the area.
