Double home victory for Thai badminton players in the Toyota Open

The National Stadium in Bangkok witnessed an electrifying display of badminton prowess as Thai players clinched two titles in the prestigious Toyota Thailand Open yesterday.

Supanida Katethong, ranked 16th globally, stunned spectators by defeating China’s 7th-ranked Han Yue in a thrilling final to secure the women’s singles title.

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Supanida emerged victorious over her formidable opponent, Han Yue, with a final score of 21-16, 25-23.

Her triumph not only earned her the winner’s cheque of 1.13 million baht but also the prestigious King’s Trophy.

Expressing her elation, Supanida credited the unwavering support of the home crowd for boosting her confidence. She also extended her gratitude to her coach, Kim Ji-hoon, for his guidance and mentorship over the past two years.

Meanwhile, the Thai duo of Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai claimed victory in the women’s doubles category, dominating the court against Indonesia’s Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Amallia Cahaya Pratiwi.

With a resounding victory of 21-14, 21-14, the Thai pair secured their first title in three years, reasserting their prowess in the badminton arena.

However, the mixed doubles final saw a setback for the Thai contingent as Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai fell short against China’s Guo Xinwa and Chen Fanghui.

Despite a valiant effort, the Thai duo succumbed to their opponents with a score of 12-21, 21-12, 21-18.

Nevertheless, their impressive performance throughout the tournament underscored their potential on the international stage.
