Lifeguards battled to save the Pole as frantic CPR efforts unfolded on Phuket’s scenic shoreline

A dream holiday turned to tragedy for a 36 year old Polish tourist who was found dead after a solo morning swim at Kamala Beach.

The man was pulled from the water, unresponsive, after lifeguards spotted him floating face down near the Kamala Shrine yesterday morning, May 8. Despite frantic CPR attempts on the beach and en route to the hospital, the man was later pronounced dead at Patong Hospital.

The incident occurred in front of Village 3, Kamala subdistrict, Kathu district, Phuket. The name of the deceased has been withheld pending notification of his family.

According to emergency responders, the man entered the water alone at around 8am. Lifeguards later spotted him floating in the sea at approximately 10.35am. They rushed to recover him and began immediate resuscitation efforts.

“We received word from Kamala lifeguards that a male tourist was found unconscious in the water,” a representative from the Kamala Subdistrict Administrative Organisation (SAO) rescue unit said. “CPR was already being performed when our team arrived at the scene.”

The Kamala SAO rescue team responded quickly and coordinated with the Narendorn Command Centre to dispatch an Advanced Life Support (ALS) vehicle. The man was transferred to Patong Hospital via ambulance, where medical staff continued efforts to revive him.

A doctor at Patong Hospital later confirmed the cause of death as drowning. An autopsy was conducted, and no signs of physical assault or foul play were found. Hospital staff also confirmed that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

Friends of the deceased told police the man had travelled to Phuket with a group, but had decided to take a solo swim that morning. They are now assisting police in contacting his family and arranging for the repatriation of his body for religious rites in Poland, reported The Phuket News.

Officers from Kamala Police Station have opened a case file and confirmed there are no current suspicions regarding the cause of death.
