Phuket honours teachers with National Teacher’s Day celebration
Phuket officials commemorated the 69th Teachers’ Day, also known as Wai Khru Day, with an event at Phuket Wittayalai School on Thursday, January 16, honouring educators for their vital role in shaping Thai education.
Phuket Vice Governor Samawit Suphanphai led the event, which was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education Region 6 Office, the Culture Office of Phuket, and various school administrators. The gathering included a range of activities designed to celebrate the contributions of teachers who inspire and nurture Thai education. The day began with an alms-giving ceremony at 7.30am, followed by a Buddhist merit-making ceremony.
Samawit conducted the lighting of incense sticks and candles in reverence to the Triple Gem—the Buddha, his disciples (Sangha), and his teachings (Dharma)—and made offerings to monks. The event provided a moment to reflect on the legacy of educators, with participants observing a minute’s silence to remember teachers who have passed away, followed by an oath-taking ceremony led by senior educators.
Outstanding teachers and educational staff were honoured with awards, recognising their significant achievements. In his speech, Vice Governor Samawit highlighted the essential role of teachers in shaping the future of Thailand. He referenced the 2025 Teachers’ Day slogan promoted by Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra: “Teachers spark dreams, encourage them to think and create opportunities in life for Thai children.”
“Teachers are the cornerstone of human resource development. They serve as role models and guide students to achieve their potential, nurturing their physical, mental, and intellectual growth. Teaching is more than imparting knowledge—it’s a lifelong spiritual responsibility requiring relentless dedication and perseverance.”
The vice governor also extended his congratulations to the award recipients, urging them to continue setting an exemplary standard for both students and fellow educators, reported The Phuket News.
