Typhoon Matmo brings heavy rain to Thailand’s 32 provinces
Tropical storm's indirect impact widespread heavy rainfall forecast

Thailand’s Meteorological Department has warned of widespread heavy rainfall across 32 provinces today, October 6, due to the influence of Typhoon Matmo and a strengthening monsoon system. Bangkok and surrounding areas are forecast to see a 60% chance of thunderstorms.
The northeastern and eastern provinces, including Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Chanthaburi, and Trat, are expected to bear the brunt of the downpours.
Typhoon Matmo weakened to a strong tropical storm at 1am today and made landfall in Guangxi, southern China. The storm is moving northwest and is forecast to weaken rapidly, with no direct impact on Thailand.
From 6am today to 6am tomorrow, the northern provinces, including Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Tak, Phitsanulok, and Phetchabun, will see thunderstorms covering 30% of the area. Temperatures are expected to range from 22 to 25 degrees Celsius (°C), climbing to highs of 34 to 36°C, with southwesterly winds at 10 to 15 kilometres per hour (km/h).
In the northeast, 60% of the region will experience thunderstorms, with heavier rainfall likely in Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, and Mukdahan. Temperatures will hover between 22 to 25°C and peak at 32 to 35°C. Winds will blow from the southwest at 10 to 20 km/h.
The central region, including Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Sawan, Lopburi, Saraburi, and Ratchaburi, will see thunderstorms in 40% of the area. Temperatures will range from 23 to 24°C and climb to 33 to 35°C, with southwesterly winds at 10 to 20 km/h.
Still a chance of rain
Eastern provinces such as Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat will face 60% rainfall coverage, including heavy rain in some areas. Sea conditions will be moderate with waves reaching 1 metre, rising to over 2 metres during storms.
Southern Thailand’s eastern coast is forecast to see thunderstorms in 30% of the region, especially in Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Temperatures will range from 24 to 25°C, peaking at 32 to 36°C. Southwesterly winds will reach speeds of 15 to 30 km/h, with sea waves up to 1 metre and higher in storm-affected areas.
On the western coast, including Ranong, Phang Nga, Trang, and Satun, 30% of the region will experience thunderstorms. Temperatures will range from 23 to 25°C, with highs of 32 to 34°C. From Phang Nga northwards, winds will blow at 15 to 35 km/h, causing waves of 1 to 2 metres. Southwards from Phuket, winds will be slightly calmer at 15 to 30 km/h, with wave heights around 1 metre.
Bangkok and surrounding provinces are warned of thunderstorms in 60% of the area today, with temperatures ranging from 23 to 25°C, and highs of 30 to 32°C. Winds will blow from the southwest at 10 to 20 km/h. Authorities have urged residents to remain alert for heavy rain and possible localised flooding.
