The Nan “U-Turn of Death”. A fatality almost every day.

Thailand’s U-Turns, a favorite traffic mechanism of Thai road planners, are a cause of constant delays, dangerous turns and frequent fatalities.

Daily News reports on a U-turn in Nan, northern Thailand, where there is a fatality almost every day. Nan is east of Chiang Mai on the Laos border.

The police had shut it but the locals wanted it reopened so they didn’t have to go out of their way to turn. But a couple clips show how dangerous this U-Turn is.

In the first a motorcycle crosses over the road from the left causing a pick-up to swerve to avoid him and collide with parked vehicles. The pick-up driver is seriously injured after the smash. The motorcyclist just dawdled off as if nothing had happened AND ghost riding in the wrong lane!

The motorcyclist is now assisting the police with their inquiries.

In the second clip at the same location from last week, just two days before, another motorcycle is seen cutting in front of a postal service vehicle. The postal van has no chance and the motorcyclist pays with his life.

Locals in Nan call this particular spot “U-turn morana” – The U-turn of Death.
