Thailand poised to become regional hub for electric vehicle production
Thailand is stepping into the spotlight as a potential regional centre for Electric Vehicle (EV) manufacturing, bolstered by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin‘s confidence and support. This sentiment was shared with the public on December 1 by the Government Spokesperson, Chai Watcharong.
PM Srettha has reportedly been working closely with various agencies to encourage and aid international private entities, particularly those involved in the production of EVs. This proactive approach is part of the nation’s strategy to position itself as a key player in the growing EV industry.
This strategy has already yielded tangible results, most notably in the form of an investment by GAC AION, a subsidiary of the Guangzhou Automobile Group. The company has recently established an EV manufacturing hub in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) of Rayong, contributing an impressive 2.3 billion baht (US$65 million) to the local economy. The manufacturing unit is particularly focused on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) market.
The establishment of the GAC AION manufacturing base is a two-phase project. The first phase, slated for completion by July 2024, will see the factory capable of producing more than 50,000 electric vehicles every year, reported The Pattaya News.
The Thai PM’s confidence in Thailand’s readiness to seize opportunities in the EV industry is palpable. He envisions the nation producing superior electric vehicles and pioneering new technology in this field, said Chai.
“Confidently, Srettha believes that even more large private companies will be interested in investing in Thailand in the EV industry and help expand the economy and provide more income to Thai locals.”
The prime minister’s vision for the country includes not only economic growth but also increased income for the local population, thereby improving the standard of living. This kind of forward-thinking, combined with the willingness to embrace new technologies, is what places Thailand on the map as a burgeoning centre for EV manufacturing.
