Thai woman with immigration offence dies in Japanese police custody
A Thai woman, who was arrested in Japan for an immigration offence, died in Japanese police custody on Sunday, January 12.
The Japanese news agency The Mainichi reported the death of the 46 year old Thai woman, yesterday, January 14. Her name has not yet been disclosed by the police. She had been detained since January 10 at Namagata Police Station in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, for an immigration offence.
Police officers informed the media that they noticed the suspect experiencing breathing difficulties at approximately 5.15am on Sunday and immediately called for medical assistance. Upon arrival, the medical team found her unconscious and transported her to a hospital.
Sadly, doctors were unable to save her, and she was pronounced dead at around 7.05pm the same day.
According to the police, the woman exhibited health issues from the day of her arrest. She was reportedly unable to consume food and was given intravenous drips at a hospital in Tsuchiura Prefecture before being transferred back to the police station.
Her condition did not improve, and police officers found her unresponsive at around 3.35pm on Saturday, January 11. A medical team was summoned, and preparations were made to transfer her to a hospital. However, her symptoms worsened again on Sunday, ultimately leading to her death.
There has been no confirmation of whether the woman had any pre-existing medical conditions. The exact cause of her death has also not been disclosed in the report.
Officers from Namagata Police Station insisted that they provided appropriate care for the woman, stating:
“There were no problems with our response.”
The case drew attention among Thai netizens, with some demanding further clarification from Japanese police. Others speculated that the woman might have succumbed to the cold weather or been unable to communicate her symptoms effectively due to language barriers.
In a related incident reported in September 2023, a Thai mother has called for an investigation into the death of her 23 year old daughter, who mysteriously fell from the eighth floor of a condominium in Japan just a day after her arrival.
The young woman was reportedly on a phone call with someone shortly before her death. This person is suspected either of being involved in her death or of possessing crucial information about its cause. Unfortunately, no further updates on the investigation have been released to the public.
