Rawai residents who register for a Covid-19 vaccine have a chance to win gold. In an incentive to get people vaccinated, Phuket’s Rawai municipality is starting a lucky draw with 10 gold necklaces as well as cash prizes up for grabs.

Many governments and businesses in Thailand and overseas have started incentives to entice people to get vaccinated. A town in Chiang Mai is giving away a live cow each week to residents who have registered for a vaccine. In the US, the group “Joints for jabs” handed out cannabis to vaccinated people in New York City and the campaign “#ShotforSam” gave out $7 USD credits for a Sam Adams beer to people who were fully vaccinated against Covid.

In Rawai, the incentive seems to be working. So far, around 70% of Rawai residents have registered for a vaccine, according to Mayor Aroon Solos. While it’s enough to reach herd immunity, he says he hopes 90% of residents register for a vaccine.

Phuket is set to reopen in July to foreign tourists who are vaccinated against Covid-19 and local officials still need to vaccinate at least 70% of the island’s population by the end of June.
