Woman caught on CCTV stealing 7,500 baht from lottery shop
Elderly thief poses as customer and grabs cash from counter before leaving scene
A security camera captured an elderly woman posing as a customer and stealing 7,500 baht in cash from a lottery shop in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok on Saturday, October 25.
The owner of the lottery shop, 56 year old Supaporn Tananchai, shared the CCTV footage of the theft on social media, urging the online community to help identify the thief.
In an interview with a local news agency, Supaporn said the incident occurred at around 7am on Saturday when she was away from the shop. Supaporn’s shop is located outside a Lotus supermarket in Bang Bua Thong, Kheha Village.
Supaporn explained that she normally operated the shop alone, but she had planned to visit a temple to make merit that day and asked her husband to take care of the shop.
Her husband said the 70 year old thief asked him to help find a lottery ticket with a specific number. He located the ticket and handed it to her, but she declined to buy it, claiming she was not impressed with the number.
He only realised the cash was missing after she left the shop. The 7,500 baht he had placed on the counter had disappeared. The couple reported the incident to Bang Bua Thong Police Station and reviewed security camera footage.
The video showed the elderly woman quickly grabbing the cash when Supaporn’s husband was taking to another customer. She placed the money in her skirt pocket before slowly walking away from the store.
Supaporn stated that she had never seen the woman in the community before. She also left a message for the thief, saying a person of her age should instead be a positive role model for the community. Supaporn said she had worked hard for her money and hoped the suspect would return it.
Police have yet to identify the thief and are reviewing further security camera footage to track her down.
