A mentally ill Thai man used a pestle to beat his male victim to death in front of a house in the Bang Kae district of Bangkok at 3am yesterday, November 26.

A Thai woman reported the death of her boyfriend, 23 year old Kittiphon Chobsin, to officers at Lak Song Police Station early yesterday morning. Kittiphon’s lifeless body was found in front of the house in Perm Sub Village, Soi Phet Kasem 62/1.

Kittiphon was wearing a white T-shirt and short jeans. He had numerous severe wounds to the head and died at the scene. Kittiphon was not a resident of the village. He had come to meet his girlfriend, who was working at the house as a caretaker for the bedridden patient.

Officers checked the CCTV camera near the house and spotted the killer wearing white pyjamas. Kittiphon was seen getting out of the taxi and about to enter the house.

The killer approached Kittiphon from behind and hit him repeatedly in the head with an unidentified object until Kittiphon collapsed. The killer then fled the crime scene to his house, which was about 50 metres from the scene.

Mental illness blamed

Officers attended the residence and apprehended the culprit, 46 year old Phumphat Yoomankong. Following the murder, he took measures to cleanse his body and change clothes, but he did not elude arrest. Phumphat confessed to assaulting Kittiphon, presenting the police with the pestle he used in the attack and the clothing worn during the crime.

Despite admitting to the assault, Phumphat was unable to articulate the motive behind the murder, providing confused information. Subsequently, Phumphat and his family members were taken to Lak Song Police Station for further interrogation.

Claiming that Phumphat suffered from mental illness, his mother and sister asserted that he seldom left the house, and they were unaware of his activities leading up to the crime. The family insisted that there was no personal acquaintance or prior conflict between Phumphat and Kittiphon.

In a brief explanation, Phumphat stated that he attacked Kittiphon out of fear for his safety, believing that Kittiphon posed a threat to him.

Wuttikrai Jaturongsaereekun, the superintendent of Lak Song Police Station, stated that Phumphat’s family must substantiate his mental health condition to the police. Phumphat is currently facing charges of premeditated murder and will remain in police custody pending the submission of medical evidence.
