Lufthansa and Thai Airways to revolutionise Eurasian travel
In a bold move to redefine travel between Europe and Asia, Lufthansa and Thai Airways International are supercharging their partnership with a codeshare expansion that’s set to shake up the aviation industry.
Starting this month, travellers will have unprecedented connectivity to Southeast Asia, as flights from Bangkok to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Manila take on a Lufthansa flight number under Thai Airways’ operation.
This strategic expansion deepens the relationship between these Star Alliance founding partners, established in 1997. It marks a significant step forward following the US Department of Transportation’s approval last year for Lufthansa to carry Thai Airways’ TG code on its Germany-US routes.
With this latest move, Lufthansa taps into the rapidly growing business and leisure markets in Southeast Asia, giving European travellers seamless access to these vibrant destinations.
“This development underscores our commitment to offering unparalleled connectivity and convenience for our customers.”
The inclusion of Manila is particularly significant, offering a vital link between the Philippines and Europe, where currently only Air France operates a direct service via Paris.
Southeast Asia’s tourism boom since the pandemic makes this a shrewd move. Vietnam and the Philippines stand to benefit from a surge in European visitors, boosting local economies. Meanwhile, European travellers will enjoy the simplicity of single-ticket bookings to multiple Asian cities, eliminating the hassle of juggling itineraries.
For business travellers, the codeshare enhances efficiency, paving the way for stronger economic ties between the regions.
The partnership is part of Lufthansa’s broader strategy, which recently included collaborations with Bangkok Airways and Air India, and extended codeshare agreements covering 17 additional routes via Frankfurt and Munich, reported Aerotime.
In related news, in a major shake-up for travellers, Thai Airways is relocating its Singapore operations to Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 starting February 18. The move promises better lounge access and enhanced facilities for passengers flying the popular Bangkok-Singapore route.
