High stakes: Woman nabbed at Norway airport carrying cannabis

A woman was caught red-handed at Norway’s Gardermoen Airport in Oslo, allegedly smuggling a hefty 41.7 kilogrammes of cannabis through customs.

Claiming ignorance, the suspect insists the suspicious suitcase was handed over by an unknown stranger in Thailand. Now, she’s in deep water, facing a probe that could unveil ties to a global drug trafficking network.

Foreign news agencies disclosed that the woman, in her 30s, was arrested as she landed on a flight from Bangkok. Despite approaching customs with seemingly nothing to declare, her jittery behaviour raised red flags. Officers swooped in for a search, uncovering the cannabis haul cleverly concealed in her baggage.

Whisked away for a grilling by the Norwegian police, she’s facing a spell behind bars. Detained for four weeks without a peep from the outside world, the woman reiterated her innocence in court, stating she unwittingly received the luggage from a stranger in Thailand.

Norway takes a hard line on drug offences, with stern sentences stretching over a decade for those linked to international drug syndicates.

KhaoSod reported that the situation raised eyebrows among observers questioning how she bypassed Thai airport checks so effortlessly. While cannabis laws in Thailand have loosened, moving such a large stash across borders is another matter entirely.

As she braces for a legal storm, this tale is a stark reminder: playing the mule for unknown strangers can lead to sky-high consequences.

Smuggling cannabis from Thailand into foreign countries is not a new phenomenon. Several ill advised drug couriers have been being arrested as they passed through customs.

Five travellers arriving from Bangkok were busted in a brazen smuggling attempt at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Christmas Day. Indian customs officials seized a staggering 26 kilogrammes of hydroponic marijuana, worth 26 Indian crores (approximately 104 million baht)—ingeniously concealed in everyday household items.

Meanwhile, a young Polish man in the United Kingdom was sentenced to two years in a young offenders institution after pleading guilty to trafficking almost £100,000 (4.3 million baht) of cannabis into Newcastle International Airport in the North-East of England.

He claimed he was coerced into the illicit operation by a threatening organised crime syndicate.
