Lost in the woods: Italian tourists rescued on Koh Pha Ngan

Police on Koh Pha Ngan in Surat Thani province successfully located two Italian tourists lost in the forest for over three hours yesterday, April 11.

The incident was reported by Police Lieutenant Vinij Bunchit after coordination with the Italian embassy, leading to the activation of local search and rescue teams.

The two tourists, Maria Florencia Abaca and Linda Rattero, found themselves unable to navigate back from the forest path near Haad Khom in Koh Phangan district. Although uninjured, they provided their location to police via a mobile communications device. This information was shared with relevant agencies, including the Koh Phangan Tourist Police and the Department of National Parks, in order to facilitate a prompt rescue operation.

Despite challenging weather conditions with heavy rain, search and rescue teams, comprising approximately 50 personnel from various local agencies, managed to locate the pair within three hours. The tourists were safely escorted back to their accommodation, with the assistance of the tourist police who facilitated their return journey on motorcycles.

The tourists expressed gratitude to the police and other involved agencies for their assistance. Paisit Thongcherm, acting district chief, emphasised the importance of tourist safety and the commitment to maintaining Koh Phangan as a globally renowned tourist destination. He acknowledged the collective efforts of all involved parties and extended a warm welcome to future visitors, assuring them of comprehensive safety whether they are Thai or foreign tourists, reported KhaoSod.

In similar news, a body was discovered in a deep forest in Phetchaburi province, bringing an end to a week-long search for the 65 year old father of a local assistant village headman.

The body was found on March 27 by a search team from the Sawang Sanphet Thammasathan Foundation, in the forest of Ban Thung Pong, subdistrict Klat Luang, Tha Yang district. The deceased was found about 1 kilometre from the main road, wearing only black trousers, barefoot, and without a shirt.

Nearby, a mobile phone and a green checkered cloth were found. There were no signs of struggle or assault. Thongjuea had been missing for a week, with his body located 2 kilometres from his home.
