Japanese photographer revives Bangkok nostalgia with film pics

Photographs of Bangkok from the past, captured by Japanese photographer Doi Kuro, have gone viral on Thai social media in response to the return of the Y2K fashion. The images have evoked a sense of nostalgia for those who recall the good old days.

The Y2K (Year 2 Kilo) or Year 2000 fashion trend is sweeping across Thailand and teenagers are being transported back to the days of baggy jeans, mini skirts, chunky sneakers, and platform heels.

The trend influenced not only their style but also their accessories, with teens seen sporting miniature digital cameras similar to those prevalent in the mid-90s.

The connection between the old photographs of Bangkok taken by Doi Kuro and the return of Y2K fashion may not be immediately clear, however, the trend has triggered a wave of nostalgia among many people for the old days of Thailand and Bangkok.

Thai celebrities have also jumped on the bandwagon, posting pictures of themselves sporting the Y2K style and sharing their memories of the era on social media while others made known that they have taken to watching old Thai movies to feel nostalgic.

Doi Kuro’s pictures of Bangkok in the 1980s have circulated on Thai social media for years evoking a sense of nostalgia among Thai netizens who remember their lives during that time.

The photographs received a warm reception, with many expressing gratitude for the photographer’s role in preserving the memories of Bangkok and sharing their own stories. However, some users also voiced disappointment that the roads and facilities in Bangkok have remained largely unchanged over the years and could benefit from further development.

Aside from Bangkok, Kuro also travelled to other provinces like Chiang Mai in the north and Songkhla in the south. He also had a huge photo collection across Asia like in Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, etc. Follow more of his works via his official Facebook account Doi Kuro.
