Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google, and Microsoft are set to invest in Thailand, marking a significant achievement for the nation’s economy. The total investment from these tech giants is expected to reach around 300 billion baht.

The announcement was made by government spokesperson, Chai Wacharonke, following Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s successful talks with executives from the three tech powerhouses during his US visit.

These investment schemes are expected to bring substantial economic benefits to Thailand. They will not only enhance the nation’s digital infrastructure but also foster the development of a highly skilled workforce.

AWS’s planned investment in cloud computing infrastructure will ramp up Thailand’s competitiveness and boost the expertise of its workforce in this burgeoning sector. Microsoft, on the other hand, has formalised its commitment to invest in the country by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government. This alliance is set to improve Thailand’s competitiveness in digital technology and enable the government to deliver e-services more efficiently, reported Bangkok Post.

One of the appealing factors for the tech firms is Thailand’s plan to adopt the Utility Green Tariff, according to Chai. Google has also entered into an MoU with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES), a move that will further position Thailand as a key player in the digital sector and contribute to economic growth.

Google plans to establish Thailand as its fourth data centre hub in the Asia-Pacific region and the 11th globally, said Chai.

“The prime minister considers this a successful beginning, and the government will put more effort into drawing leading firms to invest in the country.”

He further quoted the prime minister, highlighting Thailand’s advantageous geographical location, ready infrastructure, and robust public health and education systems as appealing factors for international investors.

Earlier this week, the Board of Investment (BoI) revealed Amazon’s investment strategy. It will focus on setting up three data centres during the initial phase. The BoI also shared that PM Srettha had proactively encouraged Google and Microsoft to consider establishing data centres and cloud service bases in Thailand during their meeting.
