Bangkok bar offers Optimus Prime figure prayers for business success
The Optimus Prime figure in Bangkok’s Chinatown has become a sacred statue after a newly opened bar performed a traditional Thai dance as an offering to secure the success of its business.
The cocktail and wine bar, Hypnotized, shared a video last week on its official TikTok account, showing a bartender making a wish in front of the Optimus Prime figure. The caption on the video read…
“When you’ve just opened a bar and are worried it won’t be successful, you decide to worship whatever is nearby.”
In the video, the bartender is seen kneeling and holding a cocktail glass with both hands. After making a wish, he places the cocktail in front of the statue. Pedestrians watching the scene appear confused, staring at the bartender until he finishes the ritual.
Some netizens suggested the bar should offer engine oil instead of a cocktail, as it seemed more fitting for the robotic figure. The bar later shared another video, showing they took the advice.
In the follow-up video, the same bartender, along with two other bar staff, brings two gallons of engine oil and cocktail-making equipment to the statue.
The bartender prepares a cocktail in front of Optimus Prime, serving it alongside the engine oil. To complete the offering, they open the oil containers’ lids and insert a straw, presumably to make it easier for the figure to drink.
Yesterday, February 17, the bar shared another video updating followers that the place became crowded with customers. The owners credited Optimus Prime for their newfound success. To express their gratitude, the bar hired four performers to stage a traditional Thai dance in honour of Optimus Prime.
The video also captured locals emerging from their homes to watch the performance. Pedestrians and motorists stopped to observe the event, which featured the dancers wearing plastic masks of Optimus Prime and Bumblebee during part of the show.
Previously, the spot where Optimus Prime now stands was occupied by a Bumblebee figure, which has since been relocated near the River City exhibition centre.
Although some questioned whether the bar owner and staff genuinely believed in the statue’s supernatural powers, the administrator of the TikTok account clarified that the videos were part of an advertising and marketing campaign which was provided to be sucessful.
