Thai and mighty: Thunderstorms roll in with a chilly twist

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warns of thunderstorms across 28 provinces from today, including Bangkok, with strong winds and hail expected in some areas. Temperatures are predicted to drop by up to 3 degrees Celsius.

The weather forecast for the next 24 hours indicates thunderstorms, strong winds, and possible hail in the northern, central, and southern upper regions of Thailand, including Bangkok and surrounding areas. Thunderstorms may also occur in the northeastern and eastern regions.

Following this, a significant drop in temperature is expected in northern Thailand, with temperatures decreasing by 1 to 3 degrees Celsius due to strong winds.

This weather change is attributed to a high-pressure system or cold air mass from China, which has moved over northeastern Thailand and the South China Sea. It is expected to spread across the northern, central, and eastern regions today.

Residents in these areas, particularly in the north, central, and upper south, are advised to be cautious of the approaching summer storms. It is recommended to avoid travelling through areas with thunderstorms or staying in open spaces, under large trees, or near unstable structures and billboards.

Farmers should reinforce their crops and prepare to protect agricultural produce and livestock from potential damage. They should also maintain their health during this period of weather change.

Weather forecast

Additionally, the strengthening east and southeast winds over the Gulf of Thailand, the south, and the Andaman Sea will result in increased rainfall and heavy downpours in some southern areas. The lower Gulf of Thailand is experiencing stronger winds, with waves reaching 2 to 3 metres and more than 3 metres in thunderstorm areas.

The upper Gulf and the Andaman Sea will have waves between 1 and 2 metres, with greater heights in thunderstorm areas. Residents in the south should stay alert for heavy rainfall, and sailors are advised to avoid areas with thunderstorms. Small boats should refrain from venturing out to sea until March 20.

Dust accumulation in upper Thailand is rated from good to moderate due to rainfall and strong winds. However, in the north, the accumulation remains moderate to high due to weaker winds.
