Bangkok braces for extreme heat and thunderstorms
Intense heat and thunderstorms are predicted to hit Bangkok and 22 provinces, with the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issuing a warning. High waves over 2 metres are expected in the southern seas, prompting caution for mariners starting today.
As Thailand braces for a scorching day accompanied by potential thunderstorms, the TMD cautioned residents in Bangkok and 22 other provinces to prepare for extreme heat and volatile weather conditions. The southern region is also experiencing high waves, exceeding 2 metres in some areas, posing significant risks for sea vessels.
In the northern region, hot to very hot weather is anticipated, with a 10% chance of thunderstorms, mainly in Phitsanulok and Phetchabun provinces. The lowest temperatures are expected to range from 16-25 degrees Celsius, while the highest could reach between 36-40 degrees Celsius. The southeasterly winds should move at speeds of 5-15 kilometres per hour.
The northeastern region is also predicted to have a 10% chance of thunderstorms, particularly in Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, and Buriram. Temperatures could drop to 21-26 degrees Celsius and climb to 34-38 degrees Celsius, with southeasterly winds at 10-20 km/h.
Central Thailand will face similar conditions, with hot to very hot weather and a 10% chance of thunderstorms in areas like Saraburi, Lopburi, Kanchanaburi, and Ratchaburi. The temperature range is expected to be 24-27 degrees Celsius at the lowest and 37-41 degrees Celsius at the peak, with southerly winds at 10-20 km/h.
In the eastern region, there’s a 20% chance of thunderstorms, especially in Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. The lowest temperatures could be 25-29 degrees Celsius, and the highest could be 32-38 degrees Celsius. Southeasterly winds might reach speeds of 15-30 km/h, with waves around 1 metre high, rising above one metre during thunderstorms.
Thunderstorms
The southern region (east coast) is also facing a 20% chance of thunderstorms, primarily affecting Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Yala, and Narathiwat. Here, the low and high temperatures may span from 22-27 to 32-36 degrees Celsius, respectively.
From Surat Thani upwards, southeasterly winds at 15-30 km/h will generate waves around one metre high, increasing above one metre during storms. Moving further down to Nakhon Si Thammarat, easterly winds at 15-35 km/h could create waves of 1-2 metres, surging above 2 metres during thunderstorms.
The southern region (west coast) is expected to experience hot days with a 10% chance of thunderstorms, particularly in Ranong and Phang Nga, with temperatures ranging from 24-26 degrees Celsius at the lowest and 34-36 degrees Celsius at the highest. Easterly winds at 15-30 km/h will result in waves approximately 1 metre high, increasing further offshore and in areas with thunderstorms, reported KhaoSod.
In Bangkok and the surrounding areas, hot weather with occasional cloudiness is expected, with a 10% chance of thunderstorms. The lowest temperatures might be 27-29 degrees Celsius, and the highest could range from 33-38 degrees Celsius, with southerly winds travelling at 10-20 km/h.
