The digital wallet policy conundrum, promoted by the Pheu Thai Party, has taken a new turn, with vulnerable residents potentially receiving 10,000 baht in cash rather than digital currency.

Following the leadership change, rumours about the possible cancellation of the digital wallet scheme raised concern among those eagerly anticipating the funds. Many were worried that the new Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, might abandon the project.

However, the former Deputy Minister of Finance, Julapun Amornvivat, has since confirmed that the digital wallet scheme would continue as planned but declined to provide details, stating that an official press conference would be held later.

The former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, Phumtham Wechayachai, also assured that the Pheu Thai Party would advance every policy and project they had promised to the people, especially the digital wallet policy.

Phumtham stated that the Cabinet would consider the changes alongside complaints and recommendations from the public in order to improve the project to suit and satisfy every group.

Channel 3 reported that the conditions of the digital wallet scheme would be altered for vulnerable groups, such as those holding State Welfare Cards, who were the first to register for the policy.

A budget of approximately 1.22 million baht for vulnerable groups would be transferred to them in cash via their bank accounts at 10,000 baht each. However, the government has not yet confirmed this information.

The media added that the former PM of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, is set to discuss economic issues and how the digital wallet scheme would boost the economy at the special Dinner Talk: Vision for Thailand 2024, today, August 22, at Siam Paragon Hall, on the fifth floor of Siam Paragon shopping mall.

As for updates on the government, the new Cabinet has not yet been established, and Paetongtarn has not yet begun her work as PM. She will attend the oath-taking ceremony before starting her role.
