Radical Islamic groups in Bangladesh have issued warnings to the Hindu minority against openly celebrating Durga Puja, including idol worship and immersion. Insaf Keemkari Chhatra-Janta, a radical group, recently protested in Dhaka’s sector 13 against the Hindu community using a playground for Durga Puja festivities. The area has been a traditional site for celebrations for many years.
Tensions between religious groups have escalated, leading several Islamic groups to call for restrictions on Hindu festival celebrations. The protestors held placards in Bangla with slogans like “no worship anywhere by closing roads, no pollution to water by idol immersion, no worship to idols.” They listed 16 demands, citing environmental damage, misuse of government funds, and public disruption as reasons to halt Durga Puja activities.
One of their concerns is that Durga Puja has been declared a national holiday, despite Hindus making up just two per cent of the population. They argue that the festival creates a nuisance for the Muslim majority and insist that Muslims should not support such celebrations for religious reasons. The demands also include removing temples allegedly built on special lands and requiring temples to display anti-India banners and slogans.

In Khulna, Hindu citizens reported being asked to pay 5 lakh Bangladeshi taka to celebrate Durga Puja. Despite assurances from Muhammad Yunus, chief advisor of the interim government, the Hindu community in Bangladesh has faced increased attacks on life and property following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina.
