British woman dies after Brazilian butt lift in Turkey

Kaydell Brown dies following cosmetic surgery in Turkey at Clinic Expert

A British woman, Kaydell Brown, aged 38 from Sheffield, has tragically died following a Brazilian butt lift in Turkey. She had paid £5,400 for a ‘mummy MOT’, which included a Brazilian butt lift, a tummy tuck, and breast augmentation, significantly cheaper than the approximate £15,000 cost in the UK.

Kaydell, a hairdresser, underwent the procedures at Clinic Expert in Istanbul on the morning of 26 March 2024, but she did not survive the surgery.

Her sister, Leanne, 40, who was also planning to undergo the same procedures, criticised the clinic, describing it as a ‘pop-up butcher shop that needs shutting down’. Leanne expressed her anger, stating that after being informed of her sister’s death, she was handed an envelope of cash and booked on the next flight home, feeling it was handled insensitively.

Kaydell had hoped the surgery would help her regain control of her life after gaining weight due to an ankle injury, according to Leanne. She recalled Kaydell was very happy and excited about the surgery, and they were in good spirits before the procedure.

Two days later, Kaydell entered the operating theatre for the five-hour surgery. However, ten hours later, Leanne was devastatingly informed her sister had died. Leanne described being left in a room waiting for her sister, repeatedly asking about her, only to be told later that evening she had not survived.

Leanne’s request to see her sister’s body was denied, forcing her to return to England alone. The Clinic Expert stated that an internal investigation found no malpractice, attributing Kaydell’s death to a fat embolism, a known risk associated with such surgeries. Surgeon Dr Sinem Singin confirmed that the death resulted from complications rather than negligence.

A government spokesperson expressed condolences to Kaydell’s family and mentioned that the UK government is working with Turkish authorities to enhance patient safety for those seeking medical treatment abroad. They advised individuals to thoroughly research their chosen procedure, the qualifications of the clinician, and the relevant regulations in the destination country.

The UK government has been in contact with Turkish officials regarding Kaydell’s death. A British pathologist’s examination of her tissue has prompted an inquest, which has been adjourned until early 2025. The cause of death has not yet been communicated by Turkish authorities.

Since 2019, 28 British citizens have died following cosmetic surgery in Turkey, according to the Foreign Office.
