Phuket is making waves in political reform, launching a high-profile campaign to ensure fair and transparent elections across the island.

Presiding over the ceremony was Phuket Vice Governor Adul Chuthong, joined by Orapin Achiwasuk, Director of the Phuket Provincial Office of the Election Commission (ECT Phuket).

The initiative drew an impressive crowd of government officials, election candidates, supporters, and agency representatives, all eager to see reform in action.

Orapin explained the campaign’s objectives, placing a sharp focus on transparency, education, and adherence to electoral laws.

“This initiative aims to educate candidates, supporters and the public on conducting elections lawfully and promoting acceptance of the democratic process.”

The campaign highlights critical democratic values like unity, mutual respect, and understanding among participants, before and after elections. Key goals include tackling vote-buying, defamation, and dishonest campaigning.

Phuket’s electoral landscape was also detailed at the event. The province, with a population of 413,210, is divided into 24 constituencies: Mueang Phuket District leads with 14, followed by Thalang with seven, and Kathu with three, reported The Phuket News.

The project has already garnered optimism from organisers, who believe it will create a robust democratic culture in Phuket.

“This effort will strengthen the democratic framework, reduce election-related misunderstandings, and promote transparency and fairness.”

Some 47 provinces will register PAO presidential candidates, while 76 provinces will register council members. The elections will take place on February 1.

Provinces excluded from the upcoming elections are those that previously held by-elections, either due to the resignation of the local government chief before their term ended or due to election fraud. To encourage voter turnout, the EC introduced Moo Deng, the famous pygmy hippo calf, as the mascot for the upcoming elections.
