Mentally ill Phuket man attacks mother, slits local’s throat

A mentally ill man in Phuket attacked his mother before attempting to slit another man’s throat with a box cutter in east Phuket Town on February 28, leaving locals in shock.
The incident occurred near a local mosque. According to reports, the suspect, 35 year old Sansern Sa-at, first attacked his mother before turning his aggression toward 64 year old Thongsuk Yongrum, a local, slitting his throat with a box cutter in an attack which resulted in a deep wound requiring 13 stitches.
The attack took place at approximately 12.25pm near a residence on Saphan Ruam Soi 1 on Anuphas Phuketkarn Road. Witnesses reported that Sansern had an altercation with his mother before leaving on his motorbike, only to return and continue the assault as she arrived at the mosque for prayers.
A bystander attempted to intervene, leading to a struggle. During the chaos, Thongsuk, who was standing in front of his shop, was suddenly attacked.
“I was just moving a cart when he came at me and slit my throat. At first, I didn’t feel anything but when I touched my neck, there was blood everywhere. The doctor said I was lucky because the wound narrowly missed a major artery.”
Fortunately, locals quickly managed to subdue Sansern and handed him over to the police.
His mother, 70 year old Yamuna Surankun, described her son as a “danger to the community,” revealing that he had a history of violent outbursts, needing routine medication.
“He has attacked people before, even sent some to the ICU, I tried to get him medical treatment, but he refuses to take his medication properly.”
She added that she had been secretly crushing his pills into water to ensure he took them. Sansern is currently in police custody at Phuket City Police Station as police investigate further, reported the Phuket News.
