Thai man left blind after surgery at private hospital in Samut Sakhon

A Thai woman condemned a private hospital in the central province of Samut Sakhon after treatment for nasal polyps left her boyfriend blind.

The woman, identified only as Ploy, took to an online community to share details of the medical mishap. She included photos showing her boyfriend’s eye and nose injuries, which she said resulted from surgery to remove nasal polyps on October 28.

According to Ploy, her boyfriend underwent the treatment under the Social Security Fund. The doctor reportedly recommended surgery to remove the polyps and proceeded with the operation immediately without an official consent form or any prior notification to the patient’s family.

The day after the operation, Ploy’s boyfriend was unable to open his eyes due to internal bleeding. The doctor allegedly said nothing about the condition until the second day, when the medical team informed them that he might lose his sight.

The patient was then transferred to a hospital in Bangkok for further treatment. Doctors there told the couple that the man’s optic nerves had been completely severed.

He was later moved to a third hospital, where another doctor stated that nasal polyps could have been removed with a laser procedure, stressing that surgery was unnecessary. This doctor urged the couple to contact the first hospital in Samut Sakhon to demand an explanation for what had happened during the operation.

Ploy said the hospital has not issued a clear explanation for the cause of her boyfriend’s blindness, adding that the medical team has not accepted responsibility for the incident.

Ploy said she wanted to share the story as a warning to others and asked netizens for advice on what steps to take next.

Many commenters urged Ploy and her boyfriend to sue the hospital and the surgeon for reckless actions leading to serious injury. Following the viral post, the hospital reportedly reached out and offered to take responsibility for follow-up treatment.

However, Ploy and her family stated that they want the hospital and the doctor to admit their mistake and provide fair compensation.

As of now, the hospital has not issued an official statement or clarification regarding the case.
