Thai man fatally struck while crossing road to apologise to girlfriend

Girlfriend collapses in grief as fatal accident occurs right in front of her

A Thai man lost his life in a road accident after attempting to cross a road in Samut Prakan province near Bangkok to reconcile with his girlfriend, whom he physically assaulted during a financial dispute.

The 35 year old woman, Kanokon, was seen weeping uncontrollably on the traffic island after witnessing the death of her boyfriend, 40 year old Piyapong. Rescue workers had to console Kanokon while others transferred Piyapong’s body to a hospital for an autopsy.

According to Channel 8, the accident occurred yesterday, June 10, on Suksawat Road near Soi Suksawat 78 in Phra Pradaeng district. Piyapong’s body was found lying face down in the right-hand lane beside the traffic island, with a broken neck.

About 10 metres from the body was a damaged sedan driven by 29 year old Pongphat. Although Pongphat was unharmed, his vehicle’s windscreen was shattered and the front bumper sustained damage.

A second sedan involved in the fatal incident was parked in the left-hand lane near the footpath, with a broken right side mirror and a dented door. The driver, 38 year old Nattaphon, remained at the scene to give a statement to the Phra Pradaeng Police Station.

Nattaphon told officers he felt something hit his car’s right side mirror, prompting him to change lanes and pull over.

Upon exiting his vehicle to check on the car, he saw Piyapong lying motionless in front of Pongphat’s car. Nattaphon suspected that his wing mirror had struck Piyapong, causing him to fall, after which Pongphat’s vehicle may have fatally struck him.

Kanokon explained that they had argued about financial matters and that Piyapong had kicked her. She left the scene for her safety, crossing the road to wait for a taxi. Feeling remorseful, Piyapong reportedly attempted to follow her, but was struck while crossing.

Both drivers were summoned to the police station for questioning. Police have yet to disclose any potential legal consequences they may face.
